The City of Chesapeake is an employer who values and empowers its employees and understands work-life balance.We are seeking highly motivated technician with some diesel engine experience and a desire to learn the maintenance practices on fire equipment. This position is responsible for performing repairs, routine maintenance, and statutory inspections on the City's diverse fleet of fire apparatus, EMS vehicles, trailers and off-road equipment.This position will be based at 956 Greenbrier Parkway. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel- and gasoline-powered heavy trucks and fire apparatus Perform preventive maintenance on heavy- and light-duty vehicles and equipment Perform routine maintenance such as tires, brakes, electrical and hydraulic repairs, steering and suspension repairs Install, repair, or remove specialized equipment and attachments as needed Perform Virginia state safety inspections, plus other statutory inspections on fire and EMS equipment Perform shop or area maintenance such as general clean up around both the interior and exterior of the shop and property Prepare documentation such as work order notes, repairs completed, parts used, repair cost, and other information Provide advice, training and assistance to vehicle or equipment operators as necessary Perform other duties as needed to support overall fleet operations Additional Pay Opportunities $4,000 per year CDL Stipend (90-days after obtained) $2,500 per year Heavy Truck Technician Stipend $3,000 Sign-on bonus (with 24-moth commitment) $50 per ASE , maxed out at $1400, with $500 per ASE Master Certification $1050 per year tool allowance The City provides CDL training at no cost to employees. The required 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training are completed on the clock - so you get paid to train. Please browse our Benefits Brochure, for a full list of benefits and employee perks.#Mechanic, #Automotive #Firetech #TechnicianRequired Qualifications VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT :Automotive Technician I: Requires high school diploma or GED / HSE .Automotive Technician II: Requires high school diploma or GED / HSE .EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT :In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires:Automotive Technician I: One year of related, full-time equivalent experience.Automotive Technician II: Two years of related, full-time equivalent experience. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES :Automotive Technician I: Requires a valid driver's license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards . Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL and ASE Certification within the probationary period. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL , Refrigeration Recovery and Storage Certification, basic Automotive Tire Service ( ATS ) within 12 months of hire.Automotive Technician II: Requires a valid driver's license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards . Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL and ASE Certification within the probationary period. Must be able to obtain a Virginia State Inspector License within the probationary period. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.Preferred Qualifications Experience with Cummins Insite, Ford IDS , Allison and Bendix diagnostic software Experience with Hydraulic Systems Experience with Fire and EMS Apparatus Experience with aerial device systems and controls Experienced in electrical diagnosis and repair ASE and EVT certifications are a big plus State inspectors license The candidate must: Be technically proficient Be reliable Have own tools Have attention to detail Be safety conscious Be adaptable
