The Intervener of Overbrook School for the Blind exudes a passion for the school, its students, and its employees. This position will report directly to the Classroom Teacher.The Mission of Overbrook School for the Blind (OSB) is to develop and deliver education that enhances the options available for persons with visual impairments, including those with additional challenges so that they have the greatest opportunity to experience active and fulfilling lives.Organizational Description: Overbrook School for the Blind serves students who are blind or visually impaired with or without additional disabilities (such as intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, hearing impairment, sensory issues, and including those who require specialized medical care) receive a customized, individualized education based on state educational standards. OSB is more than a school, it is a community where students, families, and staff support one another and come together to build a bright future. Job Functions: Provide direct support to a student with deafblindness for all of the instructional day as determined by the student's Individual Educational Plan (IEP). The Intervener will assist the teacher in all activities in and outside the classroom as stated in the Individual Education Plan (IEP). This position requires the person to be able to work together with a team of professionals including the family, classroom Teacher, Paraeducators, Nurses and Therapists.Provides a supportive environment in which students can learnAssist the teacher in all activities in the classroom and stated in the individual Education Plan (IEP). This may include Art & Music, Physical Education classes. Also personal health and hygiene of the students, lunch preparation and lunch time activities. Note: No breaks are permitted during Physical Education classes or student lunchtime.Ability to utilize and learn middle grade skills, basic alphabet Braille and acquire knowledge of Braille machine/swing cell.Understands and implements the behavior plans and interventionsSupports the student in the water while in the Aquatic Center as assignedResponsible for morning and afternoon bus dutyParticipates in scheduled meetings and in-service training when requested or required.Preferred Qualifications:High School Diploma or GEDAssociate Degree or Paraeducator Credentials2 Years of Experience working with students who have deafblindness, autism and behavior needs including self injury and aggressionMust be proficient in American Sign LanguageDemonstrated ability to remain calm when a student is upset or aggressive. Trainings in behavior support, autism and safety care is a plusPhysical Requirements & Work Environment:Lifting: must be able to lift 50-lbs minimum, with assistance. Participate in 2 person lifts. Working Environment: Employees are subject to accidents and/or injuries, which may be incurred during the performance of the essential functions of the position.
