Working under the supervision of the Youth Services coordinator, the Teen Librarian serves patrons ages 13-17 as well as their parents, caregivers, families, and educators. Serving the two Mandeville branches, the work involves planning and conducting programming for patrons ages 13-17 at branches and outreach events. Works with the Youth Services coordinator to develop programs, outreach events, and booklists. This position requires an MLIS, you may apply for this position if you are in the last semester of an MLIS program. RequirementsPlans and conducts programming for youth ages 12-17 at two large branches, outreach sites, and virtually.Creates an environment in the teen area, which provides an enjoyable and convenient use of library resourcesServes as a specialist in teen literature and reference.Provides outreach services to area schools, after school programs, camps, and other community groups.Serves as a Teen Volunteer Coordinator for their branch. Assists the branch manager in the overall operations of the branch.Assists teenage patrons in use of public computers, software programs, Internet searching, and use of online databases for research.Serves as emergency manager in any part of the system if needed.Acts in place of branch manager when the branch manager is absent. Assists library patrons in developing basic library skills and use of technology.Trains other professional librarians, paraprofessionals and support staff in library procedures.Answers reference questions.Performs all library branch activity.Works night and weekends.Performs other duties and assignments as designated by management. Working ConditionsWork is performed primarily in a library environment while sitting at a desk or computer terminal or while standing at a counter for extended periods of time. Physical exertion may be required to replace or retrieve materials from shelves, high and low. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation are are essential to permit the employee to read and sort library materials and observe and review the work of others.Physical RequirementsMust be able to lift at least 25 pounds, push, bend, and reach as needed.Must have the physical stamina to stand for long time periods.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to work without supervisionMust have knowledge of library materials including books, magazines, audio/visual, and digital resources for teensThorough knowledge of library principles, methods, techniques, and proceduresAbility to plan, lead, and supervise the work of othersAble to work in a team environmentEffective public speaking skillsGood professional judgementMust understand the literature, technology, and information needs of teensMust have the ability to plan and conduct programs for teens based on their developmental needs and interests and the goals of the libraryMust possess excellent communication skills including written and oral as well as have the ability to communicate with and identify the library needs of youthHigh proficiency in computer skills, especially with the library's integrated automated systemAbility to maintain a professional and courteous manner towards patrons and staffMust be able to manage tasks and time efficientlyAbility to use independent judgement when possible to resolve patron and staff conflictsExcellent knowledge of library rules, regulations, and practiceCapable of working in many different library environmentsMust have a professional demeanorEducation, Training and ExperienceMaster's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited library schoolMust have a valid Louisiana driver's licenseSalary Description $22.41-$30.12
