The Summer Day Camp Counselor represents the Parks Recreation and Cultural Resources Department Summer Camps to recreation staff, parents, participants, and the Wake Forest Community. Summer Camp Counselors are responsible for the general safety, development, and fun of the campers, ranging in age from 6 to 12 years old. With co-counselors, Summer Camp Counselors follow a daily schedule to lead various activities ensuring proper communication with the rest of the Camp staff. Under the general direction of camp management, counselors must understand the high responsibility of this role and provide camp attendees with a fun, safe, and engaging environment. We seek counselors with much energy and enthusiasm and love working with children! Ideal candidates are dependable, conscientious, and work well in a team environment. Essential Functions Employee Values: Employees of the Town of Wake Forest are expected to uphold and exhibit the Town's shared employee values of caring, commitment, character, and collaboration. Essential Duties and Tasks:Play and lead activities, including swimming, arts & crafts, group games, sports, gymnastics, campus exploring, ropes course, etc. Assist with daily check-in and check-out of campers to ensure the safety of all campers.Be observant of and responsible for the campers, especially those assigned to your group.Assist with set-up and clean-up of camp and activities.Be knowledgeable of and enforce Summer Day Camp and Recreation policies and procedures.Occasionally switch age groups and fill in where needed. Attend to campers with patience and enthusiasm. Provide First Aid and activate Emergency protocols when necessary. Communicate appropriately and efficiently with parents, Recreation staff, and Camp staff.May provide other duties as assigned and within the scope of this classification. Hours:24-32 Hours per week, Monday - Friday - 7:30 AM - 6:00 PMJune 2026 - August 2026 Minimum QualificationsRecruitment and Selection GuidelinesKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesWorking knowledge of communication and organization techniques; professionalism in the workplace; English grammar and composition; office equipment, including personal computers and software programs.Skill to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; understand and effectively adhere to oral and written instructions, communications, and procedures; maintain confidentiality as related to work assignments; establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town employees and the public; operate computer hardware, software, and other office equipment.Ability to engage in physical activity.Desirable Education and ExperienceAny combination of education and experience leads to completing a high school diploma or equivalent. Six months to one-year related experience in childcare or camp programs. Employees must maintain current CPR/AED/First Aid for the professional rescuer certification. Summer Camp Counselors will undergo a Background Check process, including Drug and Alcohol screening, as part of the background verification process.Once an offer of employment has been extended, candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation, including NC State Bureau of Investigation fingerprinting.
