Job Description

Graduation from high school, two years of experience in commercial facilities maintenance work and grounds keeping/landscaping.   Basic computer knowledge is required for report generation, E-mail communication and other routine administration. Experience as a shooting range safety officer or firearms instructor with shooting range operations/maintenance facilities management experience is highly desired but not required. Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License and have and maintain an acceptable driving record.   SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS   Must have a clean criminal background and the ability to pass a complete background check.   Must have knowledge and experience around firearms and/or shooting ranges, such as prior military experience, firearms safety instructor and/or police officer/ range instructor experience. Must be willing and able to attend firearms instructor, firearms safety, shooting range safety courses as requested by supervisor. Must possess verifiable trade skills and/or experience in two or more of the following: facilities maintenance, landscaping/grounds keeper, heavy equipment operator/ maintenance/repair, small engine equipment repair, carpentry, plumbing, general construction or general mechanic on vehicles or other systems maintenance and repair experience.  Experience with and ability to read blueprints and schematics desired. Non-essential employees will not be required to work during a declared emergency but may be required to work during an undeclared emergency or in the aftermath of an event associated with a declared emergency. On an incident by incident basis, the employee's Department Head will make the determination when the employee will be required to work. Under general supervision, works independently or in teams. Daily responsibilities will consist of grounds keeping and facilities maintenance to include mowing grass and other landscape maintenance duties, minor repairs to buildings, facilities and equipment, cleaning out debris and assisting with set up for training. Assisting other city agencies with the care of the facilities and equipment. All assigned tasks may be accomplished while pistols and rifles are safely being fired on several target ranges around the range work sites. Employee may be asked to provide assistance with range training equipment and classroom set up. Work encompasses use and operation of vehicles, ride on mowers, tractors, hand and power tools; cleaning, inspecting, servicing and maintaining equipment. Performs grounds and building litter/debris removal and disposal. Sets up and works on range automatic target equipment and sets up and breaks down individual shooting ranges and range classrooms. Additional duties are consistent with general custodial work in the care and maintenance of shooting range grounds, parking areas, and buildings/facilities. Daily tasks will include use of skills in maintenance and construction trades and light electrical and plumbing work in range buildings/facilities. Requires use of tools and equipment of various trades, sweeping, mopping, and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors. Retrieving, storing, and packing spent brass ammunition casings. Employee may be responsible for relocating/moving heavy equipment, collecting and disposing of landscaping and other debris, driving vehicles, trucks and operating lawn mowers and tractors. May be asked to coordinate the efforts of the Brevard Correctional Institution-Inmate Labor Program and develop and maintain daily activity reports. Work schedule is flexible and work may be required on holidays and weekends. Employee must exercise some independent judgment and initiative in ensuring proper completion of work assignments. Reports to the assigned work center Supervisor. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Range landscaping: Mows grounds using lawn mowers and tractors, weed eats around buildings, curbs and other fixtures. Picks up and disposes of debris. Uses powered weed eaters, edgers, blowers and other equipment in the performance of assigned work. Operates motorized equipment such as city assigned motor vehicles, trucks, fork lifts, ride on mowers, lawn tractors equipped with attachments, IE fertilizer and seed spreader, aerator and box blade. Uses assigned equipment for application of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. Maintains range facilities and assembles, inspects, sets up, installs and repairs range support equipment. Inspects, sets up, uses, installs, tests, repairs and adjusts furniture, white boards, and target equipment. Inspects, sets up, uses, installs, tests, repairs and adjusts electrical, mechanical and specialized range equipment as required. Inspects and provides general maintenance to range buildings/facilities replacing light bulbs, repairing walls, doors, locks, building shelving / storage areas, assemble/move or repairing furniture and erect special settings for training programs; dumping trash cans; dusts/cleans windows, fixtures, walls, restrooms; stock/restock dispensers, clean/mop and vacuums work areas as necessary. Landscaping work includes the trimming, removal and disposal of dead and undesirable trees and shrubbery; the removal and disposal of yard waste and other cut debris; the policing of the range roadways and parking areas to enhance their beauty and safety; sweeping and cleaning off of walkways, porches, sidewalks and surfaces; relocation, removal and disposal of non-approved items from the grounds and roadways. Work may require replanting trees and shrubs. Work also includes the collection, removal and disposal of litter/debris; mowing; tree trimming and pruning; de-weeding and edging of curb lines, borders, fences, sidewalks and pavement edges; weed and grass trimming around poles, signs, fire hydrants, guardrails, irrigation distribution heads, drainage inlets, trees, shrubs, flower-mulch-rock beds and other objects that may be located within range and adjoining facilities. Performs manual labor as required in performance of daily assignments. Digs/Fills and levels ditches and excavations, prepare grounds and facilities for events. Uses hand, light or heavy equipment while performing landscaping and facilities maintenance functions; Inspects, maintains and services equipment utilized. Operates all equipment safely to include vehicles, mowers, tractors, hand and power tools safely in performance of duties. Inspects, prepares and transports vehicles and equipment from range to maintenance facility or other destinations as required. Assists in the repair and/or construction of fences, gates, walks, walls, buildings, pavilions, gazebos, restrooms, or roofs on city buildings/facilities etc., using tools of the various trades; perform rough carpentry, plumbing, painting and electrical maintenance in city building/facilities using carpentry or masonry tools. Required to operate a fork lift or similar equipment for loading, unloading, moving items and equipment on various projects. Loads and unloads equipment or materials onto or off trucks, pallets. Moves, assembles equipment such as prefabricated sheds, buildings, walls, bleachers or pavilions. Responsible for ensuring proper signage is displayed. May be assigned to shift work. May be required to work weekends and holidays. May be required to respond to after hour calls. Performs routine pre and post use equipment inspections. Performs general cleaning and routine servicing of assigned equipment and vehicles. Maintains service logs and records of all maintenance and repair work performed. Responsible for completing any special assignments which are given by the supervisor. Inputs information to supervisor for daily and weekly schedules. Responsible for inventory of supplies required to perform daily tasks. Maintains a sufficient supply of materials and equipment necessary to perform the tasks assigned. Maintains inventory log and records all supplies and materials requisitioned and consumed. Must be prepared to assist the general public, city employees, supervisors and VIP's with requests for help and directions when asked. Must respond to citizen and staff complaints and other concerns that involve any of the functions described herein. Must present a neat and professional appearance. Must use courtesy and tact when communicating with the general public, city employees, supervisors and VIP's. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs other related work as required.
