The successful candidate will recruit, develop, and lead a team of safety engineers and analysts, collaborate closely with the design and licensing teams, and ensure the safety case for our advanced reactor design meets all regulatory requirements and demonstrates the inherent safety features of our technology. Other responsibilities include:Leadership and Team ManagementLead, mentor, and develop a team of Safety Analysis Engineers, Safety Analysts, and SpecialistsEstablish team priorities, allocate resources, and manage workload across multiple projectsConduct performance evaluations and support professional development of team membersFoster a culture of technical excellence, safety consciousness, and continuous improvementRecruit and build a high-performing safety analysis teamEstablish and maintain safety analysis standards, procedures, and best practicesManage departmental budget and resource planningSafety Analysis Program ManagementOversee deterministic and probabilistic safety analyses for the IMSR designDirect the development and analysis of Design Basis Accidents (DBAs) and Beyond Design Basis Accidents (BDBAs)Ensure comprehensive transient and accident analyses using thermal-hydraulic and neutronics codesOversee evaluation of plant response to postulated initiating eventsManage assessment of safety systems and engineered safety features performanceDirect dose consequence and radiological release scenario analysesOversee sensitivity and uncertainty analyses programsEnsure integration of safety analyses across multiple engineering project teamsRegulatory and Licensing LeadershipPrepare safety analysis chapters for licensing documentation including Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) and Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) for NRC/CNSC licensingOversee development of DOE-required safety analyses including Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis (PDSA) and Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) in accordance with DOE-STD-3009Direct development of key safety decisions including target performance of structures, systems, and components (SSCs), safety system responses to normal and off-normal operations, and facility security considerationsEstablish classification rules and terminology for safety SSCs, including application of the hierarchy of controls and Defense in Depth principles to ensure safetyOversee analysis of most limiting potential dose consequences (e.g., unmitigated or Maximum Hypothetical Accident scenarios) to support Natural Phenomena Hazard (NPH) Design Category (NDC) categorizationEnsure validity assessment of selected safety document format and content, applicability of SSC classifications, and other graded approachesLead regulatory review processes and coordinate responses to technical questions from regulatory bodies (CNSC, NRC, DOE)Ensure all analyses comply with applicable regulatory requirements and guidanceRepresent the company in regulatory meetings and technical discussionsOversee development of technical specifications and operational limitsManage external consultants and contractors supporting safety analysis activitiesStrategic Planning and CommunicationDevelop long-term safety analysis strategy aligned with company licensing and deployment goalsCollaborate closely with licensing team to support regulatory submissions and licensing strategyIdentify and implement improvements to safety analysis methods and toolsPresent safety analysis results and strategies to senior leadership and board of directorsInterface with Engineering Director and executive team on safety-related decisionsCoordinate with other engineering managers to ensure integrated safety approachSupport business development activities with safety analysis expertiseRepresent the company at industry conferences and technical forumsModeling and SimulationDevelop and validate computer models for safety analysis using industry-standard codesBuild thermal-hydraulic models of reactor systems and componentsPerform single and coupled physics simulationsValidate models against experimental data and benchmarksDocument modeling assumptions, methodologies, and resultsDocumentation and ReportingPrepare detailed technical reports documenting analysis methodologies, assumptions, and resultsCreate clear visualizations and presentations of analysis resultsMaintain comprehensive documentation of safety analysis activitiesContribute to technical publications and conference papersDevelop and maintain analysis procedures and quality assurance documentationCollaborationWork closely with Physics, Thermal-Hydraulics, Systems Engineering, and Design TeamsInterface with external partners including national laboratories and consultantsParticipate in design reviews and technical meetingsSupport integrated safety assessments across multiple disciplinesContribute to continuous improvement of safety analysis methodsQuality Assurance and DocumentationEnsure comprehensive documentation of safety analysis methodologies, assumptions, and resultsMaintain quality assurance program for safety analysis activitiesOversee configuration management of safety analysis models and toolsEnsure compliance with nuclear quality assurance requirements (CSA N286.7, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, NQA-1, DOE O 414.1D)Manage internal and external technical reviews of safety analysis workRequirementsEducationM.Sc. or Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field; Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or equivalent professional certification preferredExperienceMinimum 8 years of experience in nuclear safety analysisMinimum 3 years of leadership or management experience, preferably managing technical teamsDemonstrated experience leading safety analysis programs for nuclear facilitiesExperience with regulatory licensing processes (NRC, CNSC, or DOE)Proven track record of successful regulatory interactions and licensing document preparationExperience managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneouslyTechnical
