This is skilled work at the journeyman level, performing tasks in mechanical repair and preventative maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, tractors, cranes, various pieces of equipment including mowers, edgers, trimmers, saws, and generators and other standard and special automotive equipment in accordance with standard trade practices. Work will include welding and fabrication, occasional machining of parts, changing and repair of tires on automobiles and light duty trucks, and other duties relating to the upkeep of equipment. Works with general supervision from the Fleet Mechanic Supervisor using independent judgment as to method of repair after receiving oral or written work orders as to the nature of work to be performed. A supervisor may check work during repairs or test-operating conditions of equipment after work is completed. Key Responsibilities Answer calls for road service and make repairs at job site.Changes and repairs tires on lawn mowers, small equipment, automobiles, light duty trucks, and heavy-duty trucks.Diagnose mechanical problems on most equipment and related components.Disassembles, repairs, and re-assembles air compressors, pumps and related equipment.Does general overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, small equipment (i.e., mowers, edgers, trimmers, saws, and generators) cranes, and other automotive and mechanical equipment.Drive automobiles, trucks with trailers, and service truck as needed.Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts including valves, pistons and main bearing assemblies; cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems; tunes motors using standard testing equipment.Inspects, repairs, overhauls, assembles automotive electric equipment such as alternators, distributors, and starters.Makes minor repairs to automobile and truck bodies to include touch up painting. Repairs to dents and rust may include some minor welding.Perform tire repair work.Performs drivability tests to check brake, transmissions and differentials, front and rear axle assemblies and hydraulic controls and to check for proper road performing functions.Performs general preventative maintenance (A & B services), including oil changes and lubrications, and minor repair work on all types of Town owned equipment including but not limited to automobiles, light duty trucks, heavy duty trucks, small equipment (i.e. mowers, edgers, trimmers, saws and generators), cranes, and other automotive and mechanical equipment.Removes and installs automotive electric equipment such as lights, alarms, batteries, switches and starters.Repairs and overhauls brakes, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies; repairs and installs hydraulic controls.Uses mechanical hand and power drive tools and equipment such as grinders, fender hammers and sanders, drill presses, lathes testing and gas cutting torches, welding equipment, jacks and other garage shop tools and equipment.May be required to carry a cell phone and respond to after hours and call-back work upon request.Maintains garage area in a clean and orderly condition. Minimum and Preferred Qualifications High School degree or GED equivalent required.At least five years' experience with a variety of equipment such as automobiles, light- and heavy-duty trucks, lawn equipment, and generators, cranes, and other automotive and mechanical equipment required.Completion of a related vocational course preferred. Coursework includes: Diesel Diagnostic Repair; Light, Medium, and Heavy Truck Suspension and Brakes; Electronic and Diagnostic Systems; Drivability and Emission Repair.Must hold and maintain a valid State of Florida Class "B" Commercial with air brake endorsement.Must furnish own basic automotive hand tools.Welding and Fabrication skills preferred. Skills and Competencies Knowledge and skill in the use of parts books and repair manuals.Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.Considerable knowledge of and ability to utilize the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in repair of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and small equipment.Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair of heavy trucks and construction equipment.Ability to verbalize effectively and be understood clearly in the English language.Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.Ability to handle tools, parts and equipment 10 to 110 pounds.Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.Ability and skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in mechanical repair work.Ability and skill in locating and adjusting drivability defects in motor equipment.
