Position InformationPosition Title Culinary Work PlacementDepartment Economic DevelopmentDivision Coffee ShopJob Type Part-Time, less than 20 hours per weekFLSA Non-ExemptJob SummaryThe Culinary Work Placement position is a part-time, student-focused training role with the City of Hurst Coffee Shop. This position is part of a collaborative workforce development partnership designed to provide hands-on job training and real-world employment experience for students enrolled in approved culinary programs. Under the supervisor of the Lead Barista & Student Program Supervisor, the Culinary Work Placement employee assists with beverage and light food preparation, customer service, sanitation, and general café operations. This position is intended to support skill development in food service, workplace professionalism, teamwork, and customer engagement while maintaining safe and sanitary operations. Essential Job FunctionsAdheres to the City of Hurst Code of Ideals and The Hurst Way.Prepares coffee, espresso beverages, and light food items in accordance with established recipes and quality standards.Follows written and verbal instructions, recipes, and production guidelines accurately.Provides courteous and professional customer service and maintains a welcoming environment for guests.Assists with opening and closing procedures as assigned, including cleaning, stocking, and basic cash handling under supervision.Operates café and kitchen equipment safely and in accordance with established procedures.Maintains cleanliness and organization of work areas, equipment, and dining spaces in compliance with health and safety regulations.Follows safe food handling guidelines and maintains sanitation standards consistent with local health department regulations.Uses "clean as you go" practices and completes assigned cleaning schedules.Restocks supplies and communicates inventory needs to the Lead Barista or supervisor.Works cooperatively with supervisors and coworkers to ensure consistent service and quality.Demonstrates punctuality, accountability, teamwork, and professionalism in daily work activities.Adheres to Hurst's Code of Ideals and The Hurst Way, fostering positive employee relations and professionalism.Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical and appropriate.Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and program participants.Skills, Knowledge and AbilitiesKnowledge of basic food preparation and sanitation practices.Ability to learn coffee preparation methods and café operations.Ability to maintain personal hygiene and professional appearance standards.Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.Ability to provide courteous customer service in a public-facing environment.Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with supervisors, coworkers, and customers.Ability to work cooperatively in a team-oriented environment.Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.Basic math skills for handling transactions under supervision.Ability to demonstrate and apply the City of Hurst Code of Ideals in all interactions.Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience RequirementsMust be a student of HEBISD and enrolled in the culinary program at the Buinger Career and Technical Education Academy. Must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.Must obtain and maintain all required food handling and food safety certifications in accordance with local and state regulations.Must maintain eligibility for participation in the work placement program as determined by program guidelines.Must comply with all safety rules and training requirements applicable to minor employees.Must possess reliable transportation arrangements to arrive to the jobsite on time and a current working telephone number that can be accessed by the Lead Barista or Economic Development Director for business-related purposes.Must have reliable communication and the ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. Must have flexibility to work assigned shifts.Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.Must pass a criminal background check.Physical Demands and Working ConditionsThe physical demands and working conditions described below are are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods; use hands and arms to handle, grasp, reach, and operate equipment; bend, stoop, crouch, and perform repetitive motions associated with food and beverage preparation. The employee must be able to regularly lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds when restocking inventory, operating equipment, transporting supplies, moving small tables, and stacking chairs. Occasional lifting or moving of items up to approximately 40 pounds may be required with assistance or appropriate equipment. Duties may include pushing carts, setting up or breaking down small café or meeting area furniture, and handling boxes of supplies or beverage products. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment includes exposure to kitchen equipment, hot surfaces, and moderate noise levels typical of a food service operation.
