ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON SCHOOL SYSTEM POSITION DESCRIPTIONPOSITION TITLE SEL Tutor SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT Assigned location SALARY $21/hour for Classified FLSA STATUS Non-exempt REPORTS TO Principal SUPERVISES None WORK WEEK SCHEDULE 20 Hours WORK HOURS During the school day NUMBER OF MONTHS PER YEAR 10General Statement of Responsibilities: An SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) tutor improves student academic success by teaching essential emotional regulation, self-awareness, social skills, and conflict resolution through evidence-based strategies. You will be responsible for teaching academic and social-emotional learning lessons to students using evidence-based strategies and programs such as restorative or social-emotional learning circles. You will work individually or in small groups to help students navigate challenges, build resilience, and develop positive behaviors. Key Responsibilities Direct Instruction: Teach SEL skills (e.g., self-management, relationship skills, responsible decision-making) and emotion regulation strategies. Directly teach social and emotional skills, emotion regulation strategies, and conflict resolution skills to individual students and small groups. Proactively identify ways to increase inclusion opportunities for students. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to understand student needs, identify appropriate interventions, and modify curriculum for students as needed. Gather and analyze data to monitor student progress towards goals. As needed, meet with parents, counselors, and agency representatives regarding SEL or behavioral issues. Engage in ongoing professional development and stay current with SEL research and best practices to be implemented in the classroom. Intervention Support: Provide targeted interventions for students with behavioral, mental health, or related needs. Collaboration: Partner with teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents to identify student needs and implement support plans. Data & Assessment: Monitor student progress, collect behavioral data, and adjust instructional strategies accordingly. Classroom Integration: Support a positive, trauma-informed, and inclusive environment through restorative practices or counseling. Required Skills and Qualifications Experience: Previous experience working with children or youth in an educational or therapeutic setting is usually required. Knowledge: Strong understanding of child development, restorative justice, or behavioral intervention strategies. Soft Skills: High emotional intelligence, patience, strong communication, and the ability to build rapport with students. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Able to communicate effectively with students, staff and families.
