Salary: $15.98 - $21.58 HourlyLocation : Kenner, LAJob Type: Full TimeJob Number: 100045RDepartment: Inspections & Code EnforcementOpening Date: 02/11/2026 General DescriptionONE CURRENT VACANCY35 Hours per WeekUnder general supervision, performs inspections of properties for compliance with zoning and related codes and ordinances. Work involves responding to complaints from the Mayor's Office, Council member offices, Director's office, Occupational License Office, and the general public; writing violations of junk vehicles, high grass, weeds, and litter on private property; completing an information sheet for the City Attorney's office for the court; checking vacant houses for open windows and doors and boards when necessary; checking on blighted homes and abandoned homes; writing court summons, issuing warning violations, and testifying in City and Parish court. Reports to the Code Inspector II. Duties of Responsibilities ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSAttends and testifies in City of Kenner and Parish Court.Completes information sheet for the City Attorney.Checks vacant houses for boarding and City houses for violations.Responds to complaints from various sources and observations; checks and verifies complaints.Removes signs from City property.Takes photographs and measurements of complaints.Checks and maintains equipment and City trucks.Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as complaint form, vacant houses, vacant lots, junk vehicles, and plot map.Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as complaint, vehicles, parking, fences, and houses.Refers to lots and squares, permits, legal owner, proper item number, violation codes, policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment and machinery such as radio, copy machine, etc.Uses a variety of tools such as camera, measure wheel, etc.; a variety of supplies such as paper, stickers, marker boards, general office supplies, etc.; and a variety of computer software such as Maps, Photos, etc.Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Assistant Director, Director, Mayor, Council members, Department Supervisor, and the general public.Employee will be required to work an evening and/or weekend shift on a rotation basis. Hours of work will be determined at the Appointing Authority's discretion.ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONSAssists customers at the front counter as required.Performs general office work as required, including entering and retrieving computer data, typing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, maintaining files, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, etc. Performs related duties as required.May be required to work during emergency situations, including, but not limited to, city-wide declared emergencies. Minimum Qualifications Requires a high school (or equivalent) or vocational school diploma supplemented by nine to twelve months of experience in inspection; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. This position will work a flexible schedule that will include evening and weekend hours. Must possess a valid Louisiana State Driver's License.NOTE: An Associate's degree or higher may substitute for six (6) months of the required experience. LIFE INSURANCE: All full-time employees are insured under a Group Life Insurance policy through Prudential Life Insurance Company. The coverage is one and half times the employee's salary, up to $300,000. The policy also provides a Basic Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefit. The premium cost is covered by the City of Kenner. Coverage is effective the first of the following month, following full time employment.RETIREMENT SYSTEM: The City of Kenner's regular full time employees are enrolled with the Municipal Employees Retirement System of Louisiana. Both the City of Kenner and the employee contribute the required percent to the system. The employee's contributions are kept on account and will be refunded, if the employees leaves employment before they are retirement eligible. DEFERRED COMPENSATION: The City of Kenner currently participates in a 457 Plan with MassMutual. This is a voluntary investment program that the employees are allowed to participate in at a contribution rate of their choice (must be within the designated maximum and minimum limits, as set for by Plan Document). The City of Kenner does not contribute to the 457 Plan. HOLIDAYS: Sixteen paid official holidays are observed, plus any other holidays which may be declared by the Mayor. ANNUAL AND SICK LEAVE: Eligible Kenner employees earn annual leave and sick leave. Accrual of hours will increase based on the number of years of service.WORKING TEST PERIOD: Upon appointment to a position in the classified service, the employee shall serve a working test period of six (6) months, unless extended.
