ART CAMP FACULTYKalamazoo Institute of Arts is a mission-driven, equal opportunity employerUpdated 3.2.26 SUMMARY OF POSITION The Kirk Newman Art School at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts has offered Art Camp to youth since 1961. The program has grown over the years to become one of the leading camps in southwest Michigan, offering high quality arts instruction and art making to more than 500 students annually. Art Camp Faculty contribute to this legacy by helping plan and implement engaging Art Camp programs and activities that reflect institutional priorities, museum exhibition experiences, and age appropriate, high quality, hands-on arts curricula. Working under the Head of Family and School Programs, Art Camp Faculty serve a wide range of students from across the Kalamazoo region and are responsible for instruction that inspires students' creative process, self-expression, and artistic skill building. Art Camp Faculty members are also expected to work in close collaboration with other Faculty, institutional staff, and stakeholders and shall conduct up to 4 hours of prep work for each week of teaching and be available to work Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m during designated Art Camp weeks.ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES Develop and communicate age-appropriate lesson plans for each planned week of teaching for approval by the Head of Family and School Programs and in collaboration with other faculty or staff, as needed. Communicate needed equipment, supplies, classroom set-up, or other needs to the Head of Family and School Programs to be approved, purchased, and arranged far in advance of Art Camp dates. Create a welcoming and engaging learning environment and implement approved age-appropriate lesson plans for each planned week of teaching; inspire youth creative thinking through art examples, storytelling, and technique demonstrations. Meet all classes regularly and on time as scheduled for the full duration of the class periods and for the entire length of class term. Provide prompt feedback to students on projects and serve as a positive role model and mentor to youth, fellow Art Camp Faculty, institutional staff, classroom monitors, and volunteers. Problem solve, adapt, or adjust lessons based on students abilities or other needs when required. Adhere and uphold institutional guidelines, work cooperatively, possess excellent communication skills, and demonstrate classroom management skills for multiple grades, ages, and abilities. Attend and participate in any Art Camp faculty meetings and any required training/professional activities. Work in collaboration with the Head of Family and School Programs and any staff to evaluate lesson plans and explore any opportunities for future improvements, when necessary.TEACHING TIMEFRAMESPlease note that the following date ranges for different camp grades and ages may be subject to change:SPRING BREAK 2026 ART CAMP Grades 1-5: Includes full day or half day teaching, Monday through Friday for one week. Dates are Mar 30-Apr 3.SUMMER 2026 ART CAMP Ages 4-Kindergarten: Includes half day teaching options, Monday through Friday, for one week each. Dates are June 8-12, June 15-19, July 6-10 and July 13-17. Grades 1-5: Includes full day or half day teaching options, Monday through Friday, for one week each. Dates are June 8-12, June 15-19, June 22-26, July 6-10, July 13-17, and July 20-24. Grades 6-11: Includes full day teaching options during the week in which this camp is offered. Please note that additional teaching dates may be added for Grades 6-11. Dates are June 22-26 and July 20-24.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESThis position directly supervises any classroom monitors or volunteers, if provided, in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include: relevant training, clearly communicating responsibilities, coaching and mentoring, and maintaining a stable and productive classroom environment. QUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be flexible and able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Bachelor's degree or equivalent level of experience; arts education degree or experience preferred. Experience as an art teacher, with a background of working with children. Demonstrated excellence in a variety of art techniques; experience planning lessons in art, art making, and art history in accordance with the institution's learning objectives. Knowledge and experience in preparing and managing a safe, clean, and highly organized art making environment, with practice training users on how to safely utilize materials and/or operate equipment. Possess excellent planning and organizational skills and exercises strong communication skills. Sensitive to the confidential nature of information processed and shared within the School and the KIA.
