Join Horwitz and become part of a legacy of excellence and opportunity.POSITION OVERVIEW:The Building Automation Systems Intern will support the Building Automation Systems (BAS) team with system checkout, startup assistance, device verification, documentation, and troubleshooting support after installation has been completed by electrical contractors. This internship is designed to provide hands-on exposure to BAS field operations, including control systems, HVAC equipment integration, commissioning support, and system diagnostics. The intern will work under the guidance of experienced Systems Technicians and Engineers to develop technical knowledge of building automation systems and controls.RESPONSIBLITIES/DUTIES:These responsibilities generally describe the nature of the position and may not be all inclusive:System Checkout & Startup Support:Assist with point-to-point checkout of BAS devices and control pointsSupport verification of device addressing, communication, and signal integrityHelp identify installation discrepancies and report findings to senior techniciansObserve and assist with bringing systems online per project documentationProgramming & Functional Testing Support:Assist with loading controller programs and firmware under supervisionSupport functional testing and sequence verificationLearn BAS programming standards and controller configuration processesAssist during commissioning activities and performance testingDiagnostics & Troubleshooting Assistance:Support troubleshooting of control system and HVAC-related issuesObserve root cause analysis proceduresAssist in documenting system issues and corrective actionsDocumentation & Coordination:Help maintain accurate service records and startup documentationAssist with as-built documentation updatesCoordinate with project managers, technicians, and field staff as neededParticipate in project meetings when applicableProfessional Development:Gain exposure to BAS platforms, industrial protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus), and field devicesDevelop understanding of HVAC systems and control strategiesLearn safety standards and jobsite protocolsReceive mentorship from experienced technicians and engineersSKILLS/ABILITES: Strong interest in automation, controls, or mechanical/electrical systemsBasic understanding of electrical or mechanical principles preferredAbility to read and interpret basic wiring diagrams and plans (preferred)Strong problem-solving and analytical skillsWillingness to learn in a hands-on environmentAbility to work independently and collaborativelyBasic proficiency with Microsoft OfficeStrong communication skillsEDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:Currently pursuing an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls, Engineering Technology, or related technical fieldPrior technical, construction, or field experience a plus (not required)Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites
