This is accomplished by supervising the maintenance of City signs and signals. Other duties may include maintaining traffic control equipment, residential roadway lighting and school zone flashers, performing traffic studies, providing safe working environments for City workers, providing various administrative services and by interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position provides direction to other employees. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSThe following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.Maintains traffic control equipment by running tests to ensure correct operation, performing preventative maintenance on signal hardware, troubleshooting and repairing traffic signal problems, installing new traffic signals, assisting the traffic engineer in programming and modifying signal-timing plans, changing out controllers and implementing software needed by traffic engineer.Maintains school zone flashers by ensuring correct operation, maintaining knowledge of flasher assembly, installation and operation, programming clocks with school meeting times, running tests on flasher equipment and inspecting school zone flashers once a year.Performs traffic studies by providing hand-held traffic counts for phase time studies and by placing and securing moveable counting units at different locations.Maintains residential roadway lighting by troubleshooting and making repairs, including ensuring lights are switched off during the repairs and back on post repair.Maintains safe working environments for City workers by setting out warning signs, safety cones and barricades, accounting for flow and density of traffic and by routing traffic with arrow board.Provides various administrative services by processing work orders, maintaining daily work logs and on-call status, supervising work units and their activities, coordinating the message board and radar trailer placement and by providing preventative maintenance on aerial lift truck and other City vehicles. JOB REQUIREMENTS Education & Experience Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Six (6) months of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency plus four (4) years of relevant experience.Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.Certification and Other Requirements Valid Class C Drivers License.International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Sr. Field Technician III Certification.Required to participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergencies during non-working hours. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATIONKnowledge of:Advanced traffic signal operations, components, and hardware, including complex troubleshooting and system integration.Preventative maintenance procedures for traffic control systems and advanced diagnostic techniques.School zone flasher assembly, programming, and annual inspection requirements.Traffic study methodologies, including interpreting data for timing plan adjustments.Residential roadway lighting systems, electrical safety protocols, and repair standards.Sign fabrication processes, materials, and advanced use of sign-making equipment and software.Work zone safety practices, traffic routing strategies, and compliance with state and federal safety regulations.Supervisory principles, including work scheduling, performance monitoring, and team coordination.City maintenance procedures, recordkeeping systems, and administrative reporting.Safe operation and preventative maintenance of aerial lift trucks and specialized traffic equipment.Skilled in:Installing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex traffic signal systems.Programming and modifying signal controllers, implementing software updates, and assisting with timing plan development.Inspecting, programming, and maintaining school zone flashers with precision and compliance.Conducting and analyzing traffic studies to support engineering decisions.Diagnosing and repairing residential street lighting issues efficiently and safely.Fabricating and installing signs using advanced sign-making equipment and computer software.Establishing and maintaining safe work zones, directing traffic, and ensuring crew safety.Supervising and training staff, assigning tasks, and monitoring work quality and productivity.Maintaining accurate work logs, documentation, and administrative records.Operating and maintaining specialized equipment, including lift trucks, arrow boards, and radar trailers.Communicating effectively with City staff, contractors, and the public, including resolving issues and providing guidance.Physical Demands / Work Environment:This list is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed; it does not address the potential for accommodation.
