Oxbow's continued success and leadership within the industry are attributed to a combination of strong teamwork, innovative uses of technology, and talented employees.The Quality Engineer will execute duties necessary to ensure the effective functioning of the plant's quality assurance laboratory. Responsibilities encompass supervision, enhancement of quality processes, staff training, inspection and calibration activities, problem-solving, quality assurance procedures, auditing, promotion of customer satisfaction, and application of statistical quality control methods.Job ResponsibilitiesAdhere to all Health, Safety & Environment Policies set by Oxbow.Uphold safety standards to ensure all employees and contractors comply with Oxbow Calcining's requirements, including use of personal protective equipment, housekeeping practices, conducting and performing JSA's and JSOP's, following lock-out tag-out protocols, and meeting quarterly safety card compliance.Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as company policies and maintenance inspections.Monitor, measure, and analyze data, sharing results with relevant departments.Oversee production metrics, manage sampling and testing processes, and take corrective actions when products are out of specification.Set analytical goals for laboratory staff and design strategies to meet these objectives through established ASTM/ISO testing methods.Plan and oversee daily activities in the plant's quality control laboratory.Conduct analytical tests as needed.Create and manage laboratory staff schedules to ensure efficient communication of data to the operations group.Supervise all aspects of quality control regarding the receiving, storage, processing, testing, and collection of petroleum coke at the Baton Rouge plant.Consult with department heads and provide data interpretation upon request.Oversee special testing programs and experimental projects.Help develop or participate in quality and process improvement initiatives.Distribute information to chemists to support customer shipment reports, including certificates of analysis and QC reports.Regularly conduct inspections and training related to hygiene, housekeeping, and equipment maintenance.Assist the technical manager in selecting, assigning, developing, reviewing, and evaluating potential laboratory candidates and other staff-related tasks.Calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance on lab equipment.Ensure that work practices comply with all safety, environmental, and quality standards.Supervise adherence to timekeeping, payroll, attendance, and all plant guidelines and procedures.Directly supervise 6-7 laboratory staff members.Develop, document, train on, and implement new procedures as needed.Provide training on equipment operation and safety protocols.Lead audits, inspections, and safety meetings.Purchase laboratory equipment, parts, and supplies.Integrate ISO requirements into daily laboratory operations.Cross-train as necessary for laboratory and environmental responsibilities.Assist management with special projects, workflow process improvements, and other assigned duties.Knowledge Skills and AbilitiesDemonstrates strong attention to detail.Communicates effectively and succinctly across various settings and adapts messaging to suit the audience.Sets clear, specific, measurable, achievable, and relevant goals and objectives.Organizes and plans work systematically.Capable of independently managing tasks with minimal supervision.Possesses solid proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).Holds a valid driver's license.Exhibits strong leadership abilities.RequirementsEducation and ExperienceA bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific field is required.Preferably, candidates should have at least two years of experience working in an industrial laboratory.Physical RequirementsTypically sits or stands for extended amount of time in front of a computer.May work outdoors which may include extreme working conditions and inclement weather conditions.As needed, lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 35 pounds.Must be able to work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas.Must train in safety requirements at the facility.Must be required to move about to coordinate work.Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.Must be able to travel as neededWill be on call as neededAbility to communicate or exchange ideas by means of verbal or written word to impart information to clients or to the public and to convey detailed Instructions to other workers.
