Fehn Companies is dedicated to a culture of safety and operates under the company's core values while completing projects for clients in the community.Position DescriptionSummaryThe Heavy Equipment and Truck Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction and industrial machinery. This role requires the ability to operate commercial motor vehicles and technical expertise in engine systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, and mechanical components. The mechanic is also responsible for performing preventative maintenance to ensure equipment reliability and efficiency.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThis list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.1. Equipment Inspection and DiagnosisConduct thorough inspections of heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders) to identify mechanical issues or potential failures.Use diagnostic tools and software to pinpoint malfunctions in engines, hydraulics, transmissions, electrical systems, and braking systems.2. Maintenance and RepairPerform scheduled preventive maintenance, such as oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and lubrication.Repair or replace defective parts including engines, hydraulic cylinders, pumps, hoses, electrical wiring, axles, and other components.Perform overhauls on major systems as needed.Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, lines, and actuators.Diagnose and repair electrical systems, including starters, alternators, batteries, lighting, and control panels.Work closely with other mechanics, supervisors, and operators to understand equipment issues and complete repairs efficiently.Communicate clearly about job status, required parts, and estimated completion times.5. Record KeepingDocument maintenance and repairs performed on each piece of equipment, including parts used, labor time, and service notes.Maintain accurate service logs and comply with company or regulatory documentation standards.7. Tool and Equipment UseOperate heavy equipment, hand and power tools, diagnostic machines, welding equipment, lifts, and hoists.Maintain tools and ensure proper calibration and safe storage.9. Emergency Repairs and Field ServiceRespond to field service calls for breakdowns or urgent repairs when needed.Troubleshoot and repair equipment on-site in potentially challenging conditions.Position RequirementsQualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The ability to attend training is necessary or required by management.The ability to perform welding and torch cutting may be required.The ability to diagnose and repair A/C systems on various equipment.SafetyThis is a safety sensitive position Follow Fehn Companies AWAIR program, OSHA guidelines and safety protocolsAdhere to all safety protocols, including the proper use of PPE, tools, and equipment.Ensure repaired equipment meets safety standards before returning it to service.Participate in regular safety meetings and report hazards or incidents.Education and/or ExperienceHigh School Diploma or equivalentTwo years or more experience as a Diesel or Heavy Equipment MechanicMust have valid driver's license (Class A preferred)Language SkillsAn individual must be able to effectively resolve problems by often discussing matters with management and other personnel on site.Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
