Job DescriptionUnder general supervision performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and manual labor tasks in the general maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment. Tasks include but not limited to: carpentry, painting, masonry, glazier, roofing, flooring and repair of buildings, offices, and related facilities.ResponsibilitiesEXAMPLES OF DUTIES:Performs various carpentry work. Installs, removes, and repairs drywall. Repairs walls using spackling, paint, and tape. Installs trim and molding. Removes and replaces air conditioning units. Repairs and replaces doors, door hardware, cabinets, casework, handrails, ramps, decks, bleachers, gutters, downspouts, and building fixtures and components. Repairs and replaces lavatory stall hardware and panels. Repairs and replaces caulking, sealants, chalkboards, tack boards, map rails, and instructional boards.Prepares wood, metal, plaster, drywall, plastic, steel, and other surfaces for painting. Patches and points-up cracked or otherwise damaged surfaces including plaster and gypsum board. Applies spackling and caulk. Cleans and removes old paint from surfaces. Selects and mixes appropriate paints and thinners to obtain the desired color and consistency for a given surface. Applies paint by using a brush, roller, and spray gun. Applies glazes, shellacs, and varnishes. Refinishes the surfaces of furniture and floors.Installs, replaces, and repairs roofs in various buildings. Investigates reports of roof leaks and other roofing system problems. Completes installation of roofing systems for small areas of roofs. Performs repairs on fascia systems, pitch pockets, flashing systems, and expansion joints.Selects the appropriate type and thickness of glass for the project. Removes glazing beads, putty, retaining strips, and broken glass from window frames. Cleans and prepares surfaces for glass installation. Smooths and polishes glass edges using a sander. Measures and cuts new glass. Fastens glass into the sash. Spreads and smooths new putty using a putty knife to seal the window. Seals the window with a glazing compound. Paints trim. Prepares area for tiles and/or carpet by cutting and fitting sub-floors or ceilings, furring strips, and shimming as necessary. Selects and applies suitable cement, mastic, or adhesive. Lays out floors or ceiling patterns. Sets tiles and/or carpet in desired pattern, cutting and fitting tiles/carpet around irregular surfaces as required. Installs and repairs tile floors and/or walls including quarry tile, mixes mortar, lays bricks and stones and/or concrete sidewalks and makes and repairs steps.Plans work to ensure efficient use of materials and supplies and to present a professional product conforming to quality standards. Measures area and determines materials and supplies required to complete job. Loads and unloads job materials, tools, and equipment. Drives and operates various county vehicles and equipment to transport various materials, tools, and equipment. Cleans and restocks vehicles for the purpose of ensuring the availability or materials required at the jobsite. Participates in snow removal program for the purpose of ensuring safe and orderly work and school environments.Works independently to complete assignments. Troubleshoots and resolves building maintenance problems. Cleans and maintains tools and worksites. Records and maintains accurate records of work performed, time, and materials. Ensures work adheres to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules and regulations. Performs and completes necessary repairs to all building components and existing structures. Communicates appropriately and frequently with faculty, school administrators, supervisor/ manager(s) and other employees.Follows all safety procedures.Performs other duties as assigned.QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation, Training, and Experience:Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.Three years of professional maintenance and/or construction experience.Licenses and CertificationsPossession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent.Maryland Commercial driver's license (CDL) or an equivalent is preferred.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Knowledge of the principles and practices of building maintenance and construction. Knowledge of the use and care tools, materials, and equipment. Knowledge of the English language.Skill in preparing surfaces and sites for various general maintenance tasks. Skill in building maintenance and construction work. Skill in the operation of automobiles, light trucks, and vans.Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to maintain records of work performed. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve building maintenance problems.Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States requiredPHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:The work of this class entails heavy physical labor including frequent walking, standing, kneeling, reaching, bending, digging, lifting, and carrying objects of moderate to heavy weight, ascending/descending ladders, scaffolds, stairs and the use of tools and equipment.Works in confined spaces in proximity to loud machinery, frequently requires accessing and positioning oneself to reach limited access spaces including but not limited to crawl spaces, roofs, trenches, pits, manholes, attics, and tunnels.Recognizes exposure to live circuits and/or operating machinery in adverse weather conditions and travel to sites throughout Baltimore County.BENEFITS: BCPS offers a comprehensive benefits program for eligible employees including options for medical plans, dental plans, vision, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, disability coverage, and 403(b)/457 plans.
