Automotive Technician II: The purpose of this classification is to perform maintenance and repair of County-owned vehicles and equipment. Automotive Technician III: The purpose of this classification is to perform maintenance and repair or County-owned vehicles and equipment and to provide lead guidance and training to less experienced Automotive Technicians.Distinguishing CharacteristicsTech I: Positions in this class are primarily responsible for performing preventative maintenance and light repairs of vehicles.Tech II: Positions in this class assist with more complex repairs and are expected to independently perform maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles requiring routine diagnosis, removing and replacing parts, and troubleshooting for common automotive problems.Tech III: Positions in this class take the lead in performing the most complex diagnosis and repair of fleet vehicles, including full engine, transmission, and rear-end work.Salary RangeAutomotive Technician I - $17.95 - $22.88Automotive Technician II - $22.15 - $28.24Automotive Technician III - $23.25- $30.23 Essential Functions Automotive Technician I: Performs preventive maintenance and light repairs on vehicles: checks and replaces fluids; drains and replaces oil; collects and recovers Freon; changes and replaces filters; lubricates mechanical parts; installs and replaces blades; rotates, mounts and balances tires; replaces tires, belts, and hoses; checks and replaces batteries; greases equipment; flushes radiators; and performs tune-ups or other preventative maintenance activities as assigned.Determines amount of materials required for projects: gathers equipment, parts and supplies; assists in monitoring inventory levels of parts, equipment, tools or supplies; and initiates requests for new or replacement materials.Operates or uses various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments; and operates and maintains basic mechanics tool kit and/or vehicle-specific maintenance tool sets.Automotive Technician II: Performs vehicle inspections: inspects and tests vehicle systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical system, HVAC and emissions; completes or revises work order for repairs; obtains required parts; performs emission tests per frequency and criteria specified by state law; inspects and tests completed work; and updates required records.Performs routine and assists with complex repairs on vehicles: gathers information from vehicle operator reports, fault codes and other diagnostic data; troubleshoots and diagnoses problems; identifies items needing repair; completes required repairs; and ensures vehicle operation and performance is within specified limits.Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles: checks and replaces fluids; drains and replaces oil; collects and recovers Freon; changes and replaces filters; lubricates mechanical parts; installs and replaces blades; rotates, mounts and balances tires; replaces tires, belts, and hoses; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers; assists with complex situations and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment.Performs vehicle inspections: inspects and tests all vehicle systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical system, HVAC and emissions; supplemented by vocational training in automobile servicing or two years of experience in vehicle or equipment maintenance.Automotive Tech II: High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by vocational training and two years as an automobile technician or four years of experience demonstrating progressive skills in the mechanical repair of vehicles.Automotive Tech III: High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by vocational training and four years as an automobile technician or five years of experience demonstrating progressive skills in the mechanical repair of vehicles. Licenses and Certifications Automotive Tech I, II, and III: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.Preferred Qualifications:Automotive Technician II: Two (2) or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) current certifications.Automotive Technician III: Three (3) or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) current certifications. Physical AbilitiesAutomotive Tech I, II, and III:Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).Sensory RequirementsSome tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, and visual cues or signals.
