Job Description

The Atlantic is seeking a creative, fast-moving producer to help execute our video strategy. This will include regularly translating The Atlantic's award-winning journalism, including its archives and newsletters, into shareable videos, while upholding the Atlantic's editorial standards and larger editorial vision. This producer will shoot, edit, and produce social-first video projects, including filming during reporting trips and at live events; maintain consistent and high-quality video output; nurture relationships with audiences on video-first platforms; and analyze key performance metrics. This producer will amplify our presence on new and existing platforms, increase our publishing cadence, enhance our visual style, and diversify our video portfolio. The producer will also be expected to keep The Atlantic at the forefront of relevant industry trends and innovations, and seek new publishing opportunities to connect our journalism with wider and newer audiences. This position will also require general audience duties, collaboration across the newsroom, and occasional night and weekend work.Please submit links to three relevant clips with your application, and indicate your level of involvement with the production of the clips.Responsibilities will include: Produce and edit short- and medium-form videos, audiograms, animated swipes, and more, while maintaining the highest levels of sophistication and quality, at a competitive pace.Script, set up, film, and produce videos in office and in the field to accompany and enhance The Atlantic's reporting and analysis.Pitch and develop video projects, including short-form social videos, writer-led videos, ambitious social-first reported short videos, and more.Contribute to the enhancement of The Atlantic's video strategy, including design, workflows, distribution, and innovation.Work closely with writers and editors to translate our journalism into video formats.In collaboration with our insights team, evaluate performance metrics to inform our video strategy.Write share text and titles to accompany social videos, with eye toward clarity, engagement, editorial excellence, and SEO.Qualities of a successful candidate include:5+ years of experience filming and editing digital/social video, preferably for a media organizationExperience working with cameras, lighting equipment, gimbals, and microphones, both in studios and in the fieldAbility to conceptualize, plan, script, and execute high-level video pitches and projectsAbility to juggle regular quick-turn video needs and longer-range feature projectsHighly collaborative and energized by a fast-paced news environmentA competitive spirit and a desire to grow audiences through social videoAbility to tailor videos for diverse social media platforms and audiencesDemonstrable record of innovation in video concept, format, and executionFluency in Adobe PremierePro, AfterEffects, CapCut, or equivalent programsStrong writing skills, and excellent news and editorial judgmentMedia and social media fluencyAbility to generate and lead social conversations across a wide range of topicsKeen eye for designAbility to collect and analyze video performance metricsFamiliarity with working with branded design portfoliosSalary Minimum: $85,000; Salary Maximum: $100kThis position is based in Washington, DC.
