About the RoleBSI is seeking a Health, Safety & Environmental (EHS) Specialist to support the EHS department at a biopharmaceutical laboratory and research facility in the Boston area.This role will provide EHS support to Facilities, with a strong focus on contractor oversight for construction activities at a new facility, while also supporting ongoing laboratory safety and compliance programs. Key ResponsibilitiesLaboratory & General EHS SupportConduct laboratory inspections; observe, document, and investigate unsafe work conditionsPartner with lab personnel to develop Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and identify project-specific risksPerform risk assessments, lead incident investigations, and implement corrective and preventative actionsLead and support safety meetings with stakeholders to proactively identify and mitigate risksOversee chemical management, including:New chemical approvalsStorage and segregationFlammability considerationsHazardous inventory reviews for permit complianceDeliver safety training (e.g., new hire orientation, bloodborne pathogens, general safety topics)Support hazardous waste compliance, including Large Quantity Generator (LQG) requirementsAssist with spill response, cleanup, and regulatory reporting as neededImplement and maintain biosafety, hazard communication, and chemical safety programsMaintain and improve EHS management systemsSupport site compliance initiatives and safe work practicesConstruction & Contractor Safety OversightSupport Facilities with EHS oversight of construction activities for new facility projectsMonitor contractor performance to ensure compliance with:Site Safety SpecificationsContract safety requirementsApplicable OSHA and regulatory standardsConduct and document routine construction safety inspectionsEvaluate ongoing work activities and perform hazard analysesAssess effectiveness of contractor mitigation strategies and recommend improvementsIdentify, document, and communicate safety concerns and deficiencies to the Site Safety ManagerIssue deficiency notices and track corrective actions through resolutionMaintain detailed documentation, including:Daily safety logsInspection and audit reportsSite visitation recordsSafety checklists and compliance documentationQualificationsBachelor's degree in a scientific or EHS-related field1-3+ years of EHS experience (consulting or industry)Experience with lab safety, biosafety, hazardous materials, and/or construction safety oversightKnowledge of OSHA regulations and experience conducting compliance auditsExperience with risk assessments and incident investigationsFamiliarity with contractor safety management and construction safety standards preferredStrong communication and organizational skillsProficiency with standard computer applicationsPreferred Certifications:CIH, ASP, CSP, CHMM, or similarAbout UsBSI is a business improvement and standards company and for over a century BSI has been recognized for having a positive impact on organizations and society, building trust and enhancing lives.
