DescriptionPerforms intermediate skilled trade work performing automotive maintenance and repair; related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the moderate supervision of the Transit Maintenance Supervisor. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to DOT FTA Drug and Alcohol testing requirements. Essential Functions Adjusts and repairs automotive equipment using hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment. Disassembles defective equipment, such as air compressors, hydraulic pumps, and transfer pumps. Reassembles, adjusts and tests repaired equipment. May replace defective parts, using pipefittings and/or welding tools. May install new equipment as necessary.Overhauls automotive engines or rebuilds parts as necessary. Adjusts brakes, replaces or repairs tires, and makes automotive repairs to electrical systems to heavy-duty buses and other City vehicles. Performs preventative maintenance and tune-ups on all vehicles.Prepare records and documentation of work performed on vehicles. Advises supervision of unsafe condition(s) and/or vehicle and equipment abuse. Interacts with the public as necessary. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED equivalent.1-3 years experience in automotive maintenance and repair on heavy and light trucks.Special Requirements:Obtain State of Michigan Mechanic license within 6 months of hire. Obtain SOS Mechanic Certification within 6 months of hire. Obtain EPA Section 608 Technician Certification within 6 months of hire.Obtain Class B Commercial driver's license within 6 months of hire.Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan. Physical Requirements/Working ConditionsThis work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone. Work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).At the City of Battle Creek, we understand that benefits are an important part of the total compensation package.
