Job Description Summary: Salary: $19.30 - $28.96 per hourThe Welder Assistant is responsible for safely performing welding techniques on various TRWD projects, assisting Welder I, II on more complex welding projects and keeping the equipment and work areas clean and in good working order. The Welder Assistant works as part of a team to assist with other duties such as vegetation maintenance, structure inspection and repair, and manual labor.Job Description Essential Functions and Responsibilities: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this position.Weld components in flat and vertical positionsOperate safety equipment, use safe work habits, and maintain a clean, organized work environmentLay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulersExamine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specificationsClamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for weldingSelect and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metalsOperate an oxy-acetylene torch, plasma cutter, or carbon arc gougerChip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scrapers or power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipmentRemove rough spots from work pieces, using portable grinders, hand files, or scrapersPrepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matterPosition and secure work pieces, using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines or hand toolsDetect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisorsClean or degrease parts, using wire brushes, portable grinders, or chemical bathsCheck grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometers, calipers, and precision measuring instrumentsSet up and use ladders and scaffolding as necessary to complete workUse fire suppression methods in industrial emergenciesMix and apply protective coatings to productsPerform data entry on work orders and for timekeepingInteract and coordinate with other TRWD personnelPerform maintenance and inspections of floodgates, dam, and spillway structuresPerform general maintenance of TRWD structures and grounds including pipeline and floodwayAssist operations crew with special eventsAfter hours Emergency ResponseMaintain familiarity with strategic district levels of serviceContinuous improvement monitoring and innovation effortsPerform other duties as requiredRequired Experience: Less than one (1) year of experience using a cutting torch, grinding, and basic welding.Painting experienceKnowledge of basic welding safety and Hot Work permitDesired Experience: General construction knowledgeRequired Education/Certification/License:High School Diploma or GEDValid Texas driver's licenseDesired Education/Certification/License: Valid Texas CDL Class A or B with hazmat (H) and tanker (N) endorsements and without restriction ESuccess Factors/Job Competencies: Attention to Detail - Job requires being careful about detail and thorough in completing work tasksDependability - Job requires being reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfilling obligationsCooperation - Job requires being pleasant with others on the job and displaying a good-natured, cooperative attitudeStress Tolerance - Job requires accepting criticism and dealing calmly and effectively with high stress situationsConcern for Others - Job requires being sensitive to others' needs and feelings and being understanding and helpful on the jobIndependence - Job requires developing one's own ways of doing things, guiding oneself with little or no supervision, and depending on oneself to get things doneSelf-Control - Job requires maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situationsAdaptability/Flexibility - Job requires being open to change (positive or negative) and to considerable variety in the workplaceInitiative - Job requires a willingness to take on responsibilities and challengesPersistence - Job requires persistence in the face of obstaclesInnovation - Job requires creativity and alternative thinking to develop new ideas for and answers to work-related problemsIntegrity - Job requires being honest and ethicalAchievement/Effort - Job requires establishing and maintaining personally challenging achievement goals and exerting effort toward mastering tasksPhysical Demands and Work EnvironmentThe physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
