About the Role:The Academic Advisor serves as a key contributor to student success through a proactive, case-managed advising model. This role is responsible for delivering developmental academic advising to a diverse student population, guiding students in defining and refining their academic and career goals, and connecting them to resources that foster persistence, retention, and completion.***RESUME AND COVER LETTER REQUIRED***Required Skills & Competencies:The following is not to be construed as an exhaustive list. All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.Advising & Student SupportDevelopmental Advising: Applies student development theory to help students clarify and pursue academic, career, and personal goals.Student Advocacy: Acts as a student champion, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment that supports diverse learners.Case Management: Manages an assigned caseload to proactively monitor academic progress, intervene early, and provide individualized support.Communication & EngagementInterpersonal Communication: Demonstrates active listening, empathy, and clear articulation across all student and stakeholder interactions.Multimodal Engagement: Leverages advising technologies (e.g., CRM systems like Salesforce, learning platforms like Canvas) to connect with students virtually and in person.Collaboration: Coordinates support across academic and student affairs to remove barriers and streamline services.Technology ProficiencySystem Navigation: Utilizes institutional platforms to manage student records, monitor academic progress, and document advising interactions in accordance with FERPA.Digital Literacy: Employs a range of tools to communicate, schedule, and deliver advising content, including email, social media, and student engagement software.Program & Policy KnowledgeAcademic Programs: Maintains in-depth knowledge of curriculum requirements, pathways, pre-requisites, and placement policies.Financial Aid Awareness: Possesses working understanding of financial aid programs to refer and support students in navigating funding options.Process Guidance: Equips students with the tools and knowledge to self-navigate registration, course selection, and semester readiness.Equity & InclusionCultural Competency: Fosters an inclusive advising experience that respects and responds to diverse student identities and experiences.Barrier Mitigation: Identifies equity gaps and proactively connects students to campus and community-based supports.Professionalism & GrowthEthical Practice: Upholds confidentiality, complies with FERPA, and maintains accurate advising documentation.Continuous Improvement: Participates in ongoing professional development and institutional initiatives to advance the advising function.Education & Experience:Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work, or related field.At least one year of experience in academic advising, admissions, career services, or related higher education area.Demonstrated time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.Proficiency with advising technologies and Microsoft Office Suite.Ability to adapt to fast-paced environments and manage multiple priorities effectively.Preferred QualificationsMaster's degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, counseling, or a related discipline.Two or more years of academic advising or student services experience, preferably within a community college setting.Proven leadership, collaboration, and innovation in student engagement strategies.Work Environment & Additional Expectations:Participates in new student orientation, registration events, and ongoing advising initiatives.Works flexible hours to support institutional needs, including evenings or weekends as needed.Actively serves on college-wide committees and contributes to a culture of continuous improvement.Must demonstrate ability to promote an environment that reflects the broad backgrounds represented by our students and employees and which every individual feels respected and valued.Ivy Tech is committed to supporting the well-being, growth, and financial security of our full-time faculty and staff.
