Operate a wide variety of hand, power, and specialized electromechanical and electronic diagnostic equipment, and other miscellaneous equipment. Keeps the City vehicle fleet and mechanical equipment in a safe and sound mechanical condition. Is responsible for the overall work of the Equipment Maintenance division. May provide lead direction to personnel, as assigned or to lower level Equipment Maintenance personnel. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Diagnose and perform major repair and overhaul work on gasoline and diesel engines, involving tear down, inspection, and replacement of broken or worn parts.Re-assembly and build-up of repaired and overhauled engines.Diagnose, repair, clean, adjust, and install fuel, ignition, electrical, and cooling systems.Repair and replace carburetors, fuel pumps, starter motors, distributors, generators, voltage regulators, and other material components.Diagnose, repair and overhaul power transmissions, differential units, front and rear axles, both hydraulic and air brake systems, bearings, universal joints, and hydraulic units.Diagnose, repair and adjust steering mechanisms and other controls.Diagnose and repair computer and electronic sensor malfunctions.Diagnose and repair the equipment used in the diagnosis of various vehicles and components.Road tests automobiles, trucks, and other motor vehicles.Inspects vehicles in the shop and in the field. Diagnose and performs electrical, hydraulic and other repair and maintenance work in the shop or in the field.Fabricates and installs parts using gas or arc welding equipment.Modify and fabricate new parts.Perform preventive maintenance work on construction equipment, heavy trucks, street sweepers, automobiles, light trucks, and the motor vehicles and equipment.Read and interpret manuals, drawings, schematics, diagrams and specifications.Estimate labor, materials, and equipment and order parts required to complete assignments.Maintain and repair small gasoline engines, and similar equipment found on mowers, chain saws, etc.Install and repair power take-off equipment such as small hydraulic lift equipment.Remove and repair or replace wheels and tires.Operate and maintain the natural gas plant and pumping station.Make independent judgment as to methods to be used in safely completing assignments on time and in the most cost efficient manner.Determine parts to be used and prepare estimates of time and equipment. Determine whether or not equipment can be repaired or must be replaced.Purchase needed equipment, stocks, and parts.Uses and maintains a full set of hand, power, and shop tools and equipment related to the work.Record installation activities and cost of time and equipment expended.Make oral and written reports of work performed.Completes forms and prepares and maintains a comprehensive file system of maintenance and repair activities and prepares comprehensive reports as requested.Observe job safe practice and utilize safety equipment related to the work.Ensures safe operating condition of vehicles and equipment.Pulls vehicles and equipment from service if judged unsafe to operate.Coordinate repair and maintenance activities with the appropriate supervisors and lead workers within the departments and divisions for whom maintenance or repair is being undertaken.Keep shop supervisor informed of issues, problems or difficulties arising during the course of work.Maintain close working relationship with equipment manufacturer representatives and the various City department heads or their representatives.Keep up-to-date through technical support literature, manuals, and training provided through his/her immediate supervisor.Utilize a personal computer to maximum advantage in the conduct of work.May act as Equipment Repair Supervisor or Lead Mechanic on a relief basis.Provide assistance to the Equipment Mechanic I, as necessary.Performs a variety of other duties as assigned. Minimum QualificationsThe requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.Knowledge of:Methods, techniques, parts, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment.Trouble shooting procedures.Mechanical and automotive systems and theory.Air conditioning principles and equipment repair methods.Operation and maintenance of the tools and equipment use in the installation, maintenance, and repair of automotive and mechanical systems, and other specialized equipment.Applicable State DMV requirements relating to automotive equipment.Safety procedures and cautions related to automotive and mechanical work.Shop mathematics.Correct use of oral and written English and proper spelling, punctuation.Use of personal computers.Skilled in: Diagnosing and repairing a wide variety of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment, including computer and electronic sensor systems.Reading and interpreting complex maintenance manuals and regulations.Conducting effective and timely maintenance on automotive and other mechanical systems.Compiling and preparing clear and concise reports.Organizing and maintaining accurate records and files documenting installations and repairs for job costing/recharge purposes.Organizing and prioritizing assigned work.Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Communicating tactfully and effectively with the public and City employees.Using initiative and making sound and independent judgements within established parameters and guidelines.Respond effectively to oral as well as written instructions. A typical way to obtain these would be:Graduation from an accredited high school or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California.Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive, motorized equipment, and mechanical systems.
