The Upper School Dean of Students is responsible for providing support for students, parents, teachers, and administration to enhance and enable student success in school. The Dean of Students will work closely with the Upper School Administrative Team in carrying out the academic and behavioral programs of the School. This position will be proactive, seeking ideas and programs to support student growth and wellness while being responsive to immediate disciplinary needs. This position will participate in the Upper School Faculty Performance Review by managing the review process for a cohort of teachers.Student Discipline Oversee disciplinary and behavioral matters in conjunction with the Upper School Head Support teacher needs with discipline issues Participate or lead the development of behavior support systems and intervention strategies Maintain records of disciplinary actions takenStudent and Parent Support Responsible for the safety and accountability of all Upper School students from 8:15-3:20 Oversee student CLS policies, explaining and enforcing rules while maintaining a trusting relationship Counsel and/or direct students and parents to appropriate administrative support as needed Review, consult with others as needed, and schedule requests for Upper School student activities and space Review and approve new club applications in collaboration with the Upper School Head Explore opportunities to enrich wellness opportunities in support of Latin's Mission Provide informal opportunities for students to offer climate feedback Meet with grade level parent liaisons as needed Collaborate with Upper School counselor as needed Communicate with Upper School nurse, college office, and other offices as needed Coordinate Extended Absence Work Trackers for students, families, and teachers Investigate current practices at other independent schools and discuss with the Upper School HeadTeacher Support Oversee a cohort of Upper School teachers as a Faculty Performance Review manager Attend Upper School Administrative meeting weekly Attend division and department chairs' meetings monthly Attend 9-12 Grade Level faculty meetings quarterly Assist teachers/advisors in parent-teacher conferences as needed Provide support to faculty as appropriateSenior Class Support Attend all events involving the senior class as a whole Meet throughout the year with senior liaisons, committee chairs, and volunteers to plan senior activities Coordinate senior class events, including but not limited to, Convocation, Baccalaureate, and Graduation Work with the senior class advisoryAdministrator Support Work closely as a team with the Upper School Head and Academic Dean Lead annual calendar review process in collaboration with the Academic Dean Serve as Upper School attendance officer and supervise the Office Assistant as it relates to attendance Serve as one of several interviewers for students applying for admission to Upper School Participate in a share of annual course appeal meetings Assist with annual revisions of the Family Handbook Serve on Faculty/Staff committees as requested by the Upper School Head Participate, as pertinent, in producing and/or editing communications intended for broad distribution to Upper School students and parents Assist, as appropriate, with legal issues affecting students Help coordinate Parent Back to School Night eventAdditional Responsibilities Support the work of DEI, working with the Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to support Affinity Groups Attend and share in the supervision of student events such as dances, athletic events, plays, and concerts outside of regular school hoursEducation and Experience Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years' teaching experience; Master's degree preferred Experience working with culturally diverse families and communities Prior experience as a dean of students or in a similar role is preferredSkills Excellent interpersonal skills and a genuine interest in serving Latin's faculty, students, and their parents Excellent communication skills, both oral and written Is a compassionate and respectful collaborator Patient and relational, intuitive and genuine. Exhibits excellent powers of analysis, systems thinking, and sound judgment Can identify multiple projects and prioritize them to meet required deadlines Can assess and differentiate multiple viewpoints, clarifying issues for students, parents, teachers, or others Values and embraces both traditional and innovative practices Works effectively with families, faculty, and staff to accomplish goals and objectives.
