ControllerPhoenixTeam is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Controller to lead day-to-day financial operations across a growing technology services company supporting both federal and commercial clients. This role is responsible for ensuring financial accuracy, strong internal financial controls, and timely reporting, while providing leadership with clear visibility into cash flow, profitability, and performance. The Controller will operate as both an operator and advisor, owning core accounting functions while helping to improve processes, systems, and financial discipline. The ideal candidate brings experience in professional services and/or government contracting, with a strong foundation in project-based accounting and operational finance.Key ResponsibilitiesAccounts Payable & ReceivableOversee and manage full-cycle accounts payable lifecycle Ensure accuracy of invoices and proactively resolve discrepancies or missing documentationApprove timing and prioritization of payments aligned to cash flow needsReconcile AP activity to ensure completeness and accuracyOversee accounts receivable, including invoice preparation, system entry, and timely distribution to clientsLead collections efforts and maintain accurate AR agingReconcile receivables and ensure timely cash applicationFinancial Close & ReportingLead monthly close, including revenue recognition, reconciliations, journal entries (including intercompany), and variance analysisProduce accurate monthly financial statements and budget vs. actual reportingLead year-end close and support audit readinessEnsure financial data integrity and auditability across entitiesBudgeting, Forecasting & Cash ManagementDevelop and manage company and business unit budgetsPerform monthly forecast vs. actual analysis and provide actionable insightsProduce rolling cash flow forecasts and scenario analysisMonitor daily cash balances and manage payment schedulesProvide recommendations on funding priorities and financial planningOperational Finance & Cost ManagementSupport business unit P&Ls with accurate tracking of revenue, labor, and expensesEnsure timekeeping and labor allocations are accurate and aligned to projects and contractsManage vendor spend, including tracking actuals vs. budget, renewals, and pricing optimizationIdentify opportunities to improve margins and financial performanceControls, Compliance & Financial OversightReview bank statements and oversee account reconciliationsApprove employee expense reports and oversee monthly credit card reconciliationsEstablish and maintain strong internal financial controls and policiesSupport compliance with federal contracting requirements, as applicableSystems, Automation & Process ImprovementIdentify and implement automation opportunities across accounting and finance processesTransition manual and spreadsheet-based workflows to scalable systems and reporting toolsBuild and maintain financial dashboards and reporting to support decision-makingAdvise on financial systems, tools, and best practicesLeadership & Cross-Functional SupportPartner with executive leadership on financial insights and decision-makingCollaborate with operations, delivery, and leadership teams to improve financial visibilitySupport strategic initiatives, including growth, pricing, and operational scalingPerform additional duties aligned to business needsQualificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required (CPA preferred)5-8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experienceExperience in professional services, technology consulting, or government contracting preferredStrong knowledge of GAAP, revenue recognition, and project-based accountingExperience with QuickBooks and tools such as (or similar platforms)Proven ability to manage full-cycle accounting and financial operationsStrong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skillsHigh attention to detail and commitment to accuracyPreferred ExperienceExperience supporting federal contracts (T&M, fixed price, or cost-type)Familiarity with DCAA compliance and audit readinessExperience in a multi-entity environmentExperience improving or scaling finance processes in a growing organizationWork EnvironmentHybrid role based in the Washington, DC / Northern Virginia areaFast-paced, collaborative, and growth-oriented environmentWhy Join PhoenixTeamOpportunity to build and strengthen the financial foundation of a growing companyDirect exposure to leadership and strategic decision-makingAbility to modernize and improve finance operationsWork across both commercial and federal business lines
