CLINICAL SUPERVISOR Management - Yes Department - Nursing FLSA Status - Non-Exempt Reports to - CNO JOB SUMMARY The Clinical Supervisor is responsible for the clinical supervision and hospital operations during assigned shift. Assesses, plans, coordinates, and evaluates the clinical and operational functions of the unit to ensure quality, cost effective health care is provided by an educated and competent staff. Serves as a patient advocate and an administrative resource during the shift to ensure care meets hospital and professional standards. SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES ● Provide care for the Adult or Geriatric patient, ages 18 years and over. ● Demonstrates and understands the importance of and respect for the rights, dignity and individuality of each patient in all interactions. ● Coordinates the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. ● Oversees admissions, transfers and discharges during shift. ● Ensures that unit operations and employees are in compliance with the Nursing Practice Act, standard of care, regulatory agency standards, and policies and procedures. ● Organizes and coordinates all nursing unit functions to provide for a smooth, cost effective operation. Communicates pertinent information to on-coming shift supervisor, CNO and AOC. ● Adjusts daily schedule for illness, emergency, census changes. Documents all sick calls, tardiness, absenteeism, and other instances where policy is not followed. ● Evaluates nursing care and patient needs by regular rounding. ● Delegates effectively and holds staff accountable for quality and clinical outcomes. Accepts responsibility and accountability for clinical care. ● Serves as a role model in all aspects of job performance and human relations skills. ● Demonstrates competence in the application of principles of management. ● Assumes responsibility in the recruitment and retention of qualified personnel. ● Responsible for conducting annual evaluations of the assigned staff. ● Responsible for ensuring staff performance issues are addressed. ● Allocates resources to meet unit needs. ● Promotes staff development through education, performance evaluation, and identification of mutual goals that enhance continued professional growth. ● Performs nursing care, assists with treatments, therapies, procedures, and administers medications as necessary. ● Demonstrates and promotes evidence based practice. ● Provides and assesses effectiveness of patient and family education. ● Participates with performance improvement activities to improve quality of nursing care, promote patient outcomes and provide a cost effective environment for patient care. ● Facilitates staff nurse participation in quality improvement, committee and governance activities. ● Collects, analyzes and utilizes data for improved clinical outcomes. ● Assists in development of policies, procedures and standards reflective of current practice/literature. ● Participates in the orientation of new personnel and mentorship for all nurses. STANDARD JOB DUTIES ● Adheres to all components of the Hospital Compliance Plan in performing job duties and reports any violations or suspected violations of the Plan to the Compliance Officer. ● Demonstrates professional conduct and complies with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. ● Adheres to hospital attendance policy. ● Complies with measures for preventing exposure to blood borne pathogens. ● Participates in the Hazardous Material Program; hazards include exposure to blood and body fluids, possible communicable diseases, sharp objects and instruments, assorted chemicals and gasses as listed in the Hazardous Materials Program Manual. ● Complies with established Safety and Patient Safety Program practices. ● Performs other incidental and related duties, as required and/or assigned. ● Develops an understanding of responsibilities for recognizing patient abuse and follows policy for making appropriate referrals/interventions. ● Develops an understanding of responsibilities for participation in Performance Improvement activities and participates in such activities. ● Limits access to protected health information (PHI) to the information reasonably necessary to do the job, and shares such information only on a need-to-know basis for work purposes. (Access to verbal, written and electronic PHI for this job has been determined based on job level and job responsibility within the organization. Computerized access to PHI for this job has been determined as described above and is controlled via user ID and password.) QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience: Unrestricted RN license to practice in state of employment. Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is preferred. 5-7 years clinical nursing experience preferably ICU. Current ACLS and BLS. Language Ability: Ability to read, write and speak English. Math Ability: Ability to perform basic math skills such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills: Knowledge of basic computer skills and word processing. Certificates and Licenses: Current RN license to practice in state of employment. Maintains current ACLS and BLS certification. Supervisory Responsibilities: Nursing and Ancillary staff Work Environment The work environment is representative of that which an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Physical Demands The physical demands of this job are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
