The City of Plano Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a skilled and dependable Playground Technician to help maintain and repair playground equipment throughout our award-winning park system. This hands-on position involves inspecting playground structures, performing repairs, ensuring safety compliance, and helping keep our parks safe and enjoyable for the community. Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job. * Inspects all playgrounds for soundness and identification possible risks of hazards. * Repairs and replaces playground equipment and components. * May install new playground pieces and construct retaining walls and drains following construction plans. * Assists in the response and resolution to internally and externally generated work orders, complaints, and inquiries. * Maintains complete records of playground and fall surface inspections and status. * Makes entries into, and maintains compliance with, departmental service request and work management system. * Coordinates as required with other Parks and City staff to effectively organize scheduled work and activities. * May assist in the support of the department's asset management program. * Maintains daily work reports. * Repairs/replaces miscellaneous park furnishings (picnic tables, grills, etc.). * Provides emergency assistance to citizens or other City departments as needed. * Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential. Marginal Duties: * Performs other duties as assigned. Typical Decisions: Incumbent determines extent of hazards and related liability and makes appropriate field suggestions to Playground Maintenance Technician II and/or supervisor. Suggests methods/materials used for repairs. Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of: Construction, maintenance, and repair methods as they apply to playground and other recreation equipment; basic carpentry and plumbing methods. Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; operating a light truck; using hand tools; performing routine manual labor tasks; reading and interpreting blueprints and plans; effective use of computers and related software. Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Experience: One (1) year of general experience in construction and repair work, preferably in park maintenance or construction practices. Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements. Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) within one year of employment. Certified Playground Safety Inspector (within 24 months preferred). Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings, parks, medians & rights of way, to operate equipment and motor vehicles on terrain and streets; to operate equipment and motor vehicles around bystanders and dense crowds; strength, stamina and mobility to perform light to medium physical work and around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and specialized equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance, repairs, and various daily tasks. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull and pull materials and objects weighing up to 80 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, dust, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
