Patrol Corporal The Law Enforcement Officer/Patrol Corporal provides law enforcement, security, and protection for the University of South Carolina Aiken Community and property. Serves as the first line supervisor of a team of officers. These are certified police officers in accordance with SC Code of Laws, empowered with full arrest and police authority statewide. They enforce state laws, National Advocacy Center rules and regulations, and University rules and regulations. Executes duties of a patrol officer, provides VIP detail security, assists with critical incidents, and provides emergency first response. Work shifts may vary from week to week. Must work overtime and weekends as required. Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and 3 or more years of job related experience. At least 21 years of age at hire. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role. Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures. Knowledge of how to collect and preserve evidence. Knowledge of the Constitutionally mandated rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel. Knowledge of South Carolina law, relevant case law, and knowledge of or the ability to learn the policies of the University. Ability to exercise sound judgement within an established set of core departmental values. Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies. Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment. Be physically qualified and have no criminal record. Must pass a background investigation and complete the SC Criminal Justice Academy before assuming police duties. This position will require that the successful candidate pass a pre-employment alcohol and drug test as well as be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring drug and alcohol testing consistent with USC HR Policy 1.95, Drug and Alcohol Testing. Job Duties: Proactively patrols assigned area to prevent and detect violations of law and University policy; apprehends and arrests violators. Provides building security to include checking and securing buildings and facilities. Responds to complaints, reports of violations, and requests for assistance. Responds to stressful/critical incidents to include emergency and non-emergency calls. Conducts preliminary investigations. Conducts accident investigations. Collects, documents and stores evidence. Prepares for court cases and administrative student hearings and provides testimony. Supervises police officers in performance of regularly assigned patrols and incident investigations; conducts inspections of police personnel and equipment; issues and accounts for police equipment; provides training to new officers; advises officers on policy and procedure; reviews incident reports and prepares end of shift reports. Supervises the patrol shift in the absence of the patrol sergeant. Keeps clear and concise records and makes reports of activities. Writes detailed reports on police related activities. Issues warnings, citations, trespass notices and student disciplines to violators. Establishes/maintains positive working relationships with faculty, employees, students, and administration. Provides crime prevention information to community members and initiates crime prevention activities. Other duties as assigned. Sign-On Bonus: $7,500 sign-on bonus new hire, who was as an applicant was currently working either as a Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy or has been inactive with a law enforcement agency for less than 12 months and is able to have Class 1 certification immediately reinstated upon hire. Executed as follows: $1,750 after successful completion field training; $750 after successful completion of 1st anniversary; $2,500 after successful completion of 2nd anniversary; and $2,500 after successful completion of 3rd anniversary.
