Incumbents in this classification report directly to the Sr. Heavy Equipment Mechanic. The Equipment Mechanic inspects equipment to determine needed repairs; or works with a small group of employees doing such maintenance and repair work; and does related work as assigned.JOB RESPONSIBILITIESImportant and essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:Repairs, inspects and tests transportation equipment such as passenger cars, trucks, trailers, fire department support vehicles and their auxiliary hydraulic systems, and other transportation equipment to determine needed repairsDiagnose internal combustion engine malfunctions, noises or failuresRemoves, repairs, overhauls, and installs engines and transmissions, including heavy duty automatic transmissionsSlings and rigs equipmentInspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts, including valves, pistons, gears, and bearingsRepairs and replaces oil, water, and fuel pumpsCleans and repairs carburetors and fuel systems, including diesel fuel systemsRepairs and overhauls chassis units, including brake systems, such as hydraulic and air typesWorks on brake boosters and valvesTrues brake drums and brake rotorsFits and adjusts brake shoesRepairs and overhauls hydraulic pressure systemsOverhauls and aligns front endsRepairs power steering unitsOverhauls steering gearDoes related work as assignedRepairs vehicle air conditioning unitsRepairs exhaust emission control systemsMay repair speedometersOperate a tire machine to install tires and balance wheelsTunes enginesMakes compression testsTests coils, condensers; distributors, and other electric partsTests and repairs computer-controlled ignition systems and electronic fuel injection systemsTests ignition circuits and times camshafts and ignitionsRoad tests automotive equipment for proper performanceMay install or replace electric wiring and lampsMay repair starters, generators, and alternatorsPrepares shop orders authorizing repairs, orders parts and/or materialsTests and inspects equipment after completion of shop repairs to determine that it is in satisfactory operating condition, corrects minor faults during inspectionsMay be required to use a terminal or personal computerMakes minor repairs such as replacing glass, repairing door locks, and repairing seat adjustment mechanismsMay drive a tow truck or a pick-up truck and make emergency repairs in the fieldUses an engine computer analyzer, exhaust analyzer, compression gauge, vacuum gauge, fuel pump pressure gauge, wheel alignment gauge, drill press, hydraulic press, bench grinder, hone, drum lathe, micrometer, and other machine and hand tools of the tradeMaintains mower decks and reels on all mowing equipmentOccasionally uses a lathe in a restricted mannerOccasionally does acetylene and electric welding and brazingMay fabricate and install special equipment and parts on vehiclesMay provide direction to and oversee the work of a helper engaged in repair workMay occasionally be assigned to other duties for training purposes or to meet technological changes or emergencies.In addition, when Assigned to ElectricRepairs electric and alternative fuel vehicles including electric shuttle buses.Removes, repairs, overhauls and installs AC/DC electrical systems (12, 24, 800v).PROFILE OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATEPossess experience and a track record of accomplishment in all or many of the disciplines outlined previously in this job descriptionKnowledge of materials, machinery, tools, and equipment used in the inspection, testing, diagnosis, repair, tune-up, maintenance, and overhaul of transportation equipment such as automobiles, trucks, and trailersKnowledge of the operation and components of power train, suspension, electrical, fuel supply, exhaust, and other equipment systems contained in construction, maintenance, and firefighting equipmentKnowledge of preventative maintenance practices and methods as related to automotive, construction, and firefighting equipmentWhen assigned, knowledge and experience repairing and maintaining high voltage, all electric and hybrid-electric vehiclesKnowledge of welding and brazing processes and practicesAbility to determine the type and extent of repairs needed and whether the repairs can be done in the fieldKnowledge of safety principles and practices; ability to recognize hazardsAbility to read, interpret, and work from service manuals and sketchesPossess the ability to interact effectively and courteously with employees, consultants, contractors, and the general public in an international aviation environmentAbility to consistently demonstrate the Core Values of OIAAMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSAny combination of education, training, and experience that would likely provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform in the position.High school diploma or equivalent is required.Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic; orFour years of full-time paid experience in automotive mechanic work; orSatisfactory completion of a two-year program in automotive or truck mechanics in a recognized community college, trade, or technical school and two years of full-time paid experience in an automotive mechanic workLICENSES / CERTIFICATIONValid Driver's License equivalent to a California Class C driver's license.
