Provides patient care within a defined scope of practice that includes observation, assessment, and specified treatments and procedures. A Brief Overview Under the direction of a Registered Nurse or physician, the Emergency Department Tech III performs a variety of duties to assist the nursing staff and physicians in rendering patient care in the Emergency Department. Provides patient care within a defined scope of practice that includes observation, assessment, and specified treatments and procedures. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values. What you will do Under direction of a Registered Nurse or physician, performs specified patient care within the defined scope of practice in the assigned unit of operation in Emergency Department. Performs and documents reassessments (excluding initial triage and discharge assessment), including a full set of vital signs. Correctly positions the patient for examinations and procedures; holds efficiently for procedures. Assists with transportation of patients. Responsible for the safe administration of medications using barcode scanning approved by department policy providing necessary observation and documentation of the effects of the drug administered. Administers select medications approved by department policy as indicated and ordered. Under general supervision, performs a variety of patient procedures in accordance with policy and procedure and as ordered by the RN or physician such as performing EKGs, oro-nasal or pharyngeal suctioning, and initiating intravenous fluid therapy (isotonic fluids). May perform radiological procedures according to established guidelines in the use of mini c-arm (facility specific) and point of care testing including bedside glucose and urine pregnancy testing if needed. Documents care delivered in the patient’s medical record in accordance with Emergency Department policy and procedure. Demonstrates and promotes professional practice on the care team. Completes mandatory and unit specific competency requirements. Performs other job functions as assigned or requested. Education/Formal Training Requirements Required - Technical Degree or Diploma Paramedic Work Experience Requirements Required - Clinical/field experience 3-5 years Licenses and Certifications Requirements Required - Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support - American Heart Association Required - Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association Required - BASIC LIFE SUPPORT - American Heart Association Required - Paramedic - Tennessee - Tennessee Emergency Medical Services Division Preferred - Paramedic Mississippi - Mississippi State Department of Health Preferred - Paramedic - Arkansas - Arkansas Emergency Medical Services Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Successful completion orientation. Ability to read, write, and understand verbal or written instructions. Ability to effectively communicate verbally with others. Abiltiy to maintain confidentialty at all times according to policy and procedures and HIPAA requirements. Demonstrates compassion and patience with a deep level of concern for patients. Must be able to communicate effectively and in a positive manner with patients, family, public, and other health care workers. Must be able to cope with stressful situations, including death and dying and dealing with anguished relatives. Comply with Safety/Emergency Procedures and Nursing Service policies. Use equipment required for implementing patient care. Adhere to Methodist Healthcare Systems’ code of conduct. Supervision Provided by this Position There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position. Physical Demands The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion. Must have good balance and coordination. The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently. The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading. Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact. Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials. Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
