Description Become part of an inclusive organization with over 40,000 teammates, whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of the unique communities we serve.Full-Time Inpatient & Outpatient Weekend & Holiday RequiredThe Department of Pediatrics seeks a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. This position provides comprehensive, evidence-based care to children, adolescents, and young adults with malignant and non-malignant hematologic disorders across inpatient and outpatient settings.The APP will serve as an essential member of a multidisciplinary academic team and will play an active role in clinical care, education, quality improvement, and participation in clinical research and therapeutic trials.This position will involve primarily weekend coverage with the possibility of outpatient clinic responsibilities for admissions and follow up visits. Clinical ResponsibilitiesInpatient CareConduct daily rounds in collaboration with attending physicians, fellows, residents, pharmacists, and nursing teamsManage acute hematologic, oncologic and bone marrow transplant emergencies (e.g., febrile neutropenia, tumor lysis syndrome, sickle cell pain)Perform admission evaluations, ongoing assessments, and discharge planningOrder and interpret laboratory and diagnostic studiesParticipate in weekend and holiday coverageOutpatient CarePerform independent and collaborative visits under physician supervision, as appropriateManage outpatient oncology patients across the care continuum (active treatment, follow-up, survivorship)Provide same-day urgent/symptom-based evaluations to reduce ED utilizationManage chemotherapy and supportive care regimensMonitor treatment response and manage therapy-related complicationsProvide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, and symptom managementConduct chemotherapy education and supportive care counseling for patients and familiesCoordinate care across specialties, infusion services, and external providersDocument and bill patient encounters in compliance with institutional and regulatory standardsProcedures (within scope of practice)Lumbar puncturesBone marrow aspirates and biopsiesOmmaya tapIntrathecal chemotherapy administrationCentral line management Clinical Trials & Research ParticipationProvide direct clinical care to patients enrolled in institutional, cooperative group, and industry-sponsored clinical trialsEnsure protocol adherence in collaboration with principal investigators and research coordinatorsPerform study-related assessments and documentationAssist with eligibility screening and informed consent processes (as permitted by scope and institutional policy)Monitor for and report adverse events in accordance with regulatory standardsParticipate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and research meetingsContribute to quality improvement initiatives and opportunities for scholarly activity, including presentations and publications Academic EngagementParticipate in the education of residents, fellows, nurse practitioner students, and physician assistant studentsAttend and contribute to divisional conferences, case reviews, and morbidity and mortality discussionsEngage in ongoing professional development and academic scholarship ScheduleFull-time positionCombination of inpatient and outpatient responsibilitiesWeekend and holiday coverage required Required QualificationsGraduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant programCurrent state licensure and national board certificationDEA registrationPediatric clinical experience requiredBLS and PALS certification Preferred QualificationsExperience in pediatric hematology/oncologyExperience caring for patients enrolled in clinical trialsFamiliarity with research protocols and regulatory requirementsExperience in academic medical center environment Core CompetenciesAdvanced clinical reasoning in medically complex pediatric populationsStrong understanding of research integrity and protocol complianceExcellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skillsCommitment to family-centered, compassionate careAbility to balance clinical productivity with academic engagement Other Information Other information:Education Requirements: Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.Licensure/Certification Requirements: Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina. Board certification if required by the Department. DEA.Professional Experience Requirements: No prior experience required.Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: Demonstrated clinical competency. Effective leadership skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Demonstrated written and verbal communication and strong analytical skills.
