General Definition of Work The Transportation Technician I, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion performing routine preventative maintenance on vehicular equipment including gasoline and diesel-driven vehicles to maintain a safe and economical fleet. This position will be directly responsible for fueling buses and the upkeep of tires on buses. Employee performs district-level work to carry-out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Transportation Maintenance Services Supervisor. Salary/Status Hourly NC 11/ Full-time, 12 months Reports To Transportation Maintenance Services Supervisor Place of Work The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time. Essential Functions * Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures * Perform routine, preventive maintenance, and lesser skilled repair work on vehicular equipment including but not limited to lubrication and oil changes, brake repairs, tire replacement, wheel balancing, hose replacements, wheel bearings, electrical units, batteries, and maintaining transmissions * Perform limited troubleshooting and diagnostics of electrical and mechanical problems * Report unsafe or hazardous mechanical conditions that exist on any vehicle or equipment * Assist with scheduled vehicle inspections * Maintain all district vehicles with adequate fuel * Assist with on the road breakdowns involving buses out of fuel or buses with tire failures * Maintain all district vehicles in good condition by washing and cleaning vehicles' interior and exterior * Care for all district vehicles by disinfecting interior of buses thoroughly with approved cleaning agents * Maintain garage area and grounds in a clean, safe, and orderly condition * Assist with required paperwork and maintain appropriate records in compliance with state guidelines * Perform safety inspections on vehicles and equipment; perform routine repair work; report safety and other priority repair work to the supervisor * Drive transportation service trucks to pick up and deliver automotive parts and supplies * Load and unload recapped and used tires for inventory purposes * Assist in the location and diagnosis of mechanical defects in vehicles * Perform related work as assigned or required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities * Knowledge of basic mechanical repair, service, fueling, and cleaning vehicles * Knowledge of and ability to use tools, materials and methods used in the maintenance, adjustment, servicing, and repair of automotive equipment * Skilled in the care for tools and equipment used in vehicle maintenance * Skilled in the operation of large service vehicles * Skilled in time management * Skilled in operating basic computer programs, including email and word processing * Ability to maintain accurate records using established record keeping principles and procedures * Ability to follow safe work practices * Ability to learn and apply rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of the district's passenger transport vehicles * Ability to learn and assist in performing all tasks related in body repair, refinishing, and the mounting/balancing of school bus tires * Ability and willingness to work under extreme weather conditions and hazardous traffic situations * Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision * Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions * Ability to understand and apply basic math skills * Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, verbally and in writing, including electronic media * Ability to organize, prioritize, manage, and carry out duties efficiently and within established timeframes Education and Experience * High school diploma or GED required * Minimum of one (1) year experience in automotive setting required * Experience in automotive fleet maintenance and repair preferred * Experience with diesel vehicles preferred * Equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements * Possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, with a Passenger Endorsement 'P' and Tanker Endorsement 'N' or able to attain within 6 months of employment * Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation * Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
