Non Instructional/Operations - Transportation Job Number 4600319057 Start Date Open Date 03/11/2026 Closing Date 06/30/2026 General Definition of WorkThe Transportation Technician I, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion performing routine preventative maintenance on vehicular equipment including gasoline and diesel-driven vehicles to maintain a safe and economical fleet. This position will be directly responsible for fueling buses and the upkeep of tires on buses. Employee performs district-level work to carry-out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Transportation Maintenance Services Supervisor.QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.Essential FunctionsAdhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and proceduresPerform routine, preventive maintenance, and lesser skilled repair work on vehicular equipment including but not limited to lubrication and oil changes, brake repairs, tire replacement, wheel balancing, hose replacements, wheel bearings, electrical units, batteries, and maintaining transmissionsPerform limited troubleshooting and diagnostics of electrical and mechanical problemsReport unsafe or hazardous mechanical conditions that exist on any vehicle or equipmentAssist with scheduled vehicle inspectionsMaintain all district vehicles with adequate fuelAssist with on the road breakdowns involving buses out of fuel or buses with tire failuresMaintain all district vehicles in good condition by washing and cleaning vehicles' interior and exteriorCare for all district vehicles by disinfecting interior of buses thoroughly with approved cleaning agentsMaintain garage area and grounds in a clean, safe, and orderly conditionAssist with required paperwork and maintain appropriate records in compliance with state guidelinesPerform safety inspections on vehicles and equipment; perform routine repair work; report safety and other priority repair work to the supervisorDrive transportation service trucks to pick up and deliver automotive parts and suppliesLoad and unload recapped and used tires for inventory purposesAssist in the location and diagnosis of mechanical defects in vehiclesPerform related work as assigned or requiredKnowledge, Skills, AbilitiesKnowledge of basic mechanical repair, service, fueling, and cleaning vehiclesKnowledge of and ability to use tools, materials and methods used in the maintenance, adjustment, servicing, and repair of automotive equipmentSkilled in the care for tools and equipment used in vehicle maintenanceSkilled in the operation of large service vehiclesSkilled in time managementSkilled in operating basic computer programs, including email and word processingAbility to maintain accurate records using established record keeping principles and proceduresAbility to follow safe work practicesAbility to learn and apply rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of the district's passenger transport vehiclesAbility to learn and assist in performing all tasks related in body repair, refinishing, and the mounting/balancing of school bus tiresAbility and willingness to work under extreme weather conditions and hazardous traffic situationsAbility to work independently in the absence of supervisionAbility to understand and follow verbal and written instructionsAbility to understand and apply basic math skillsAbility to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, verbally and in writing, including electronic mediaAbility to organize, prioritize, manage, and carry out duties efficiently and within established timeframesEducation and ExperienceHigh school diploma or GED requiredMinimum of one (1) year experience in automotive setting requiredExperience in automotive fleet maintenance and repair preferredExperience with diesel vehicles preferredEquivalent combination of education and experienceSpecial RequirementsPossess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, with a Passenger Endorsement 'P' and Tanker Endorsement 'N' or able to attain within 6 months of employmentPossess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportationTravel to school district buildings and professional meetings# of Jobs 1.00 Salary: From 22.69 Teacher Scale N Minimum Educational Requirements HS diploma Term 12 Month Additional Job Information Physical Requirements/Working Conditions Work requires moderately demanding, physical work with occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds and frequently up to 10 pounds.
