Position Type: Parks and Recreation Line Employees/Seasonal EmployeesDate Posted: 2/10/2026Location: Parks and Recreation OfficesVernon Parks and RecreationTitle: Summer Camp Program Specialist- BoatingHourly Rate: $19.9403 - $20.4792/hr Job SummaryUnder the general supervision of the Camp Director, performs responsible work in the planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of a variety of challenging, engaging, safe, and age-appropriate activities within the specific program area.General DutiesDevelops a daily lesson plan and implements activities in the specialty program areaPlans differing age-appropriate activities for campers across a variety of ages and abilitiesHas daily contact with program participants and supervises campers as neededInventories supplies and prepares orders for program supplies within the specialty areaMaintains accountability of and is responsible for the health and safety of all program participantsResponsible for enforcing the rules and regulations of the Town of Vernon and Vernon Parks & Recreation DepartmentResponsible for completing required program documentation in a timely mannerAttends staff meetings and program special events as neededConducts daily safety checks of the facility, equipment, and supplies for the program specialty areaConsidered a first responder for medical emergency action proceduresMaintain a positive work attitude Performs related work as requiredMINIMUM Qualifications18 years of age or olderKnowledge of principles and practices of recreational programming as it relates to a summer day campAbility to work with children ages 5-13 and possess an understanding of their social, emotional, and physical development and needsKnowledge of and ability to instruct participants in the use of small watercraft including canoes, paddleboats, and kayaksAbility to lift boats out of boathouse and prepare them for use in the water each dayA minimum of 8 weeks previous experience in an organized day camp setting, or actively pursuing a college degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Education, or a related fieldPossess current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification or able to obtain one prior to start dateReliable access to transportationAbility to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with participants and other Town employeesAbility to organize data and maintain recordsPhysical and mental effort and Work ConditionsAble to lift objects in excess of 20 poundsAble to concentrate for extended periods of time with interruptionsAble to walk, run, swim, sit or stand for prolonged periodsAble to perform moderately difficult skills such as writing and typingAble to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as instruction of a skillAble to see objects closely and far away, such as waterfront supervisionAble to hear normal sounds with some background noise such as a call for helpAble to attend to task for an extended period of timeAble to remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self or others Able to communicate effectively with program participants, parents, and other Town employeesPotential exposure to blood, body tissues or fluids, seasonal conditions in outside weather, and to loud or unpleasant noises
