Summary Position Highlights: The lead medical technologist is responsible for the day to day technical oversight of departmental operations to ensure that quality standards are consistently maintained. The lead technologist serves as a resource for staff when troubleshooting instrument malfunctions, quality control issues, specimen issues or when assisting customers with questions. They will also be involved in process improvements, test and instrument implementation, maintaining proper stock of supplies and reagents, assisting with CAP surveys, and training new students and employees. In addition to technical responsibilities, the lead technologist assists the supervisor with duties related to the supervision of personnel; providing input on performance appraisals, addressing performance and conduct related issues with staff, and resolving problems within the department. The lead technologist also serves to facilitate communication within and between departments and shifts. The lead technologist acts as the department supervisor during the absence of the supervisor and exercises wide latitude and independent judgment when planning and organizing their responsibilities. The lead technologist also performs all the job requirements of the medical technologist position as described below (not all-inclusive). * Performs and reports testing for general clinical lab and blood bank according to written procedures, accurately, and in a timely manner. * Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient results. * Operates, troubleshoots, and takes appropriate action when needed on all test systems. * Utilizes job knowledge, judgment, and problem-solving skills to ensure specimen quality. * Identify issues that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and takes appropriate action including supervisory notification if indicated. * Participates in laboratory quality assurance programs including proficiency testing. * Performs and documents Quality Control. Takes corrective action when the patient, control, standard, calibration and/or proficiency results are not within appropriate guidelines. Documents corrective action. * Always follows established safety and biohazard procedures. * Works in an organized manner and performs testing according to written procedures so that other personnel can follow the workflow and to maximize efficiency. * Reviews pending logs and results, resolves any outstanding workload. * Communicates effectively with all members of the Moffitt organization. * Reviews pending logs and results, resolves any outstanding workload. * Maintains education, competencies, and licensure required for the position. * Must be able to follow established policies and procedures pertaining to quality control requirements and acceptability of data. * Oversees preanalytical testing activities and lab assistant staff as needed. Minimum Requirements A BS degree in Medical Technology preferred. A Florida state license is required in the 5 areas: Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunohematology and Serology. Three (3) years of experience in Chemistry and Immunology required. General Clinical Lab and Blood Bank required. Share:
