Position Type: Teacher - High School/School Counselor Date Posted: 4/9/2026 Location: Peoria Flex Academy - Peoria, AZ Date Available: 07/28/2026 Closing Date: 06/01/2026 Additional Information: Show/Hide Position Title: Behavior Counselor Department: Alternative Pathways Supervisor: Peoria Flex Academy Principal Term of Employment: 9 months Salary Classification: Teacher Salary Schedule Job Summary: The Behavior Counselor provides direct and indirect student services to reduce barriers to education, increase social/emotional growth and provide links to needed services and provides support to school teams, students, and families. They also collect data and provide community resources to parents as a team member. Essential Functions: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include, but are not limited to, the following tasks, duties, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES generally include the following. Other duties may be assigned: * Completes classroom observations for students exhibiting social/emotional/behavioral needs. * Assists the general education teacher in supporting students that exhibit social/emotional/behavioral needs within the general education setting. * Act as a resource to the Child Study Team, Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET), and District Threat Assessment Team for a student who exhibits social/emotional/behavioral difficulties. * Participates in Individual Education Plan (IEP) team meetings to collaborate on initial, annual, and review IEPs for a student with social/emotional/behavioral needs. * Consults and/or writes contracts or Behavior Intervention Plans. * Assists teachers and staff in implementation of contracts or Behavior Intervention Plans for the purpose of ensuring student access in the educational environment in compliance with established guidelines. * Exercises student supervision (e.g. getting on/off buses, transitioning between different areas, lunches, etc.) for the purpose of assessing the need for discipline or assistance and ensuring the safety of students and a safe learning environment. * Guides students in personal interactions and/or specific behavior issues for the purpose of developing interpersonal skills and successful problem-solving strategies. * Observes student behavior in various settings, as requested by teachers and/or school administrators (e.g. in the classroom in one-on-one counseling session, at home visits, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating the social, emotional and/or behavior needs of the student. * Establishes plans for managing behavior and assists students to develop/utilize internal locus of control independent of external reward. * Consults with administration and staff on alternatives to suspension. * Works with school staff to establish a schedule to provide student services. * Creates a safe environment conducive to student learning. * Maintains student records and protects their confidentiality. * Works with student in the solution of personal problems related to peers, home and family, health, emotional adjustment, etc. * Assesses need for student group interventions and works with school personnel to create group schedules. * Works with community resource agencies as appropriate for students and their families. * Provides or acts as a resource behavioral health training to staff as guided by building administration. * Works with school counselor to ensure ECAP and post-graduation plans are communicated and goals are addressed. * Performs other duties as assigned or required. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: * Knowledge of applicable Peoria Unified School District and departmental policies and procedures. * Knowledge of Special Education Policy and Procedure Manual. * Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, County and Municipal statutes, rules, regulations, ordinances and PUSD policies and procedures pertaining to social service delivery. * Knowledge of systems such as Court, DES, DCS, Law Enforcement and other systems that affect families and youth served by PUSD. * Knowledge of best practices in implementing behavioral interventions. * Skill in working with multiple sites and administrators. * Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, students, parents, the general public and others having business with the school district. * Skill in self-reflection to monitor and adjust behavior programs as needed. * Skill in operating a personal computer/tablet, utilizing a variety of software applications. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: At least one of the following: Master of Social Work, Mental Health Counseling or Marriage and Family Therapy, ADE Certified Social Worker, State Certified School Counselor or State licensed therapist and a minimum of 2 years of experience working with children with disabilities is desired. Preferred: Licensed Clinical Social Worker; Licensed Therapist OTHER REQUIREMENTS: * Must be able to pass a background clearance check. * Must be able to obtain and maintain IVP fingerprint clearance card. * Must be able to obtain and maintain an Arizona driver's license. * May be required to lift and carry heavy, bulky supplies and materials weighing up to 20 pounds. * May be required to lift students weighing up to 60 pounds. * May be required to restrain students using approved techniques. * May be required to work outside normal working hours. * May be required to travel to perform work functions. * Must be able to pass classes in and get a current certification in CPI, First Aid, CPR and Medicaid billing.
