Medical Laboratory Scientist Alternate/Related Job Titles Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)Medical Technologist (MT)Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)Clinical Laboratory ScientistTravel Medical Laboratory Scientist Location Grand Rapids, MI Onsite Flexibility Onsite Contract Details Position Type: ContractContract Duration: 6 monthsStart: April 1, 2026Shift / Schedule: Third Shift (Night Shift), 9:00 PM 6:30 AM (EST) Job Summary The Medical Laboratory Scientist Traveler performs laboratory testing on patient specimens to support accurate diagnosis and treatment. This role is responsible for specimen analysis, maintaining quality control procedures, reviewing test results, and ensuring compliance with laboratory regulatory standards including CLIA, HIPAA, and OSHA. The position requires strong laboratory knowledge, experience with high-complexity testing, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment. Key Responsibilities Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, and reporting patient test resultsMaintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimensAnalyze specimens using approved testing procedures according to department SOPsReview and release laboratory test resultsFollow CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelinesAdhere to laboratory quality control policies and document all QC activities, calibrations, and maintenanceFollow established policies when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levelsIdentify problems that may affect test performance or reporting and notify senior technologists or supervisors as neededDocument corrective actions when test systems deviate from established performance specificationsFollow department procedures when reporting STAT or critical resultsRespond to questions from customers or laboratory personnel when applicableMaintain complete records of all testing performed on-siteMaintain the general appearance and organization of the laboratory departmentEnsure reagents and test kits are labeled with received, opened, and expiration datesReview and train on new laboratory proceduresAttend monthly department meetings and training sessionsParticipate in safety training and understand the location and use of safety equipment and manualsParticipate in regulatory inspections when requiredPerform additional duties as directed by the supervisor Required Knowledge Solid understanding of basic laboratory testing proceduresKnowledge of quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) processesKnowledge of all areas of the laboratoryStrong computer skills and ability to work across multiple laboratory systems Education Requirements Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology preferred, ORBS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, ORAssociate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, ORPreviously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433 (March 14, 1990) Additional Education Requirements Foreign educated candidates must provide credential evaluation from IERF (International Education Research Foundation)U.S. educated candidates must provide an original detailed transcript Required Certifications / Licenses ASCP Certification requiredMust possess or be eligible for MT / MLT national certification from recognized organizations such as ASCP or AMTNational and State licensure as required Required Experience Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory experience in high-complexity testing for candidates with BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology Nice-to-Have Experience 1 year of clinical laboratory experience preferred Special Requirements Ability to establish work priorities and handle multiple procedures simultaneouslyAbility to collaborate with other departmentsStrong customer service skills when interacting with clientsMust maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times Additional Requirements COVID-19 Vaccination Required Benefits Medical, Vision, and Dental Insurance Plans401k Retirement Fund About the Client A leading provider of diagnostic information services dedicated to empowering healthier lives, leveraging one of the world's largest clinical laboratory databases to provide insights that help identify and treat disease, promote healthy behaviors, and improve healthcare management.
