JOB SUMMARY:The Histology Grossing Technician performs various duties to include gross examination of tissue specimens, functioning independently under direction of the Pathologists.Essential Job Duties:Perform a wide variety of tasks in grossing and processing bone marrow specimensPerform grossing for cytology specimensMaintain and organize Gross Bays daily after useAssist Histology department, including but not limited to, stainer decons and daily maintenance, loading tissue processors, embedding tissue, performing processor maintenance, etc.Clean glassware/containers and complete all assigned Accupath tasksCoordinate slides and requisitions to each corresponding facility; Place slides on board for distribution; Distribute slides after QCPrint blocks and scan requisitions for bone marrow cases received at nightLabel, stain, and coverslip bone marrow smearsAnswer the Lab telephone when staff are unavailable or absentMaintain competency through web-based Standard Operating Procedure updates as well as educational modulesAdhere to all PBM Safety policies and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodiesUtilize automated equipment properly according to lab procedures and manufacturers' instructionsHandle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals and/or irritants appropriately and safelyLearn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboard and other peripheral devicesEnsure work area has proper coverage at all times during the work shift, ie coverage or meal and/or rest periodsImmediately notifies supervisory personnel of malfunctioning instrumentationProtects confidentiality of patient information and results at all timesPerform other duties as assigned or requestedEDUCATION & LICENSURE:High School Diploma requiredEducation/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. In addition, the individual must have laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.REQUIREMENTS:One year of prior job-related experience is preferred.
