Job Description

The incumbent serves as an Advanced Diagnostic Radiology Technologist in the Mammography/Breast Imaging section of the Imaging Services Department. Performs independent technical work in support of the mammography section under the direction of a radiologist. Operates Mammographic, Tomosynthesis, Stereotactic, Ultrasound, and DEXA equipment as part of the diagnostic plan for patient care. VA Careers - Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: Duties to include but not limited to: * Independently perform Screening and Diagnostic Mammographic procedures, Tomosynthesis procedures, breast localization procedures, as well as any supplemental procedures shall meet or exceed expected quality guidelines * The Mammography Technologist's responsibilities center on patient care and image quality. More specifically, these include patient positioning; compression; image acquisition; image processing; infection control; and ensuring that all assigned QC and QA tasks are performed in a professional, traceable, and verifiable manner. * Obtains pertinent clinical data from the patient, electronic chart, requisition, and interviews with the patient and/or family. Accurate completion of the mammography intake sheet is a critical part of ensuring a proper diagnosis. * Charlie Norwood VAMC is a primary Spinal Cord Injury Center in the southeast region, and the incumbent must be able to properly position and image all SCI patients requiring breast imaging * Performs daily QA checklists as dictated by the FDA and ACR according to the Mammography Quality Assurance guidelines and maintains accurate documentation. Ensure that mammographic examinations are done ONLY if the entire QA checklist is done and there are NO areas out of compliance * Applies appropriate radiopaque markers to the breast to mark nipples, scars, lumps, etc., and exercises clinical judgment in the application of adequate compression to acquire a quality mammographic image * The technologist works directly with the Lead-Interpreting Physician (LIP), and other designated Interpreting Physicians to ensure image quality and determine additional requirements of non-standard exams. The technologist will notify Radiologists of images requiring immediate attention. * Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. This includes patient electronic records, exam requisitions, and registering and/or editing of patient exams in the Radiology Information System (RIS) and the sending/retrieving of images in the Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS). * Performs additional duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am- 4:30pm Retention Incentive: May be Authorized after 90 days in-service as an employee.
