We are currently looking for an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to join our dynamic, fast-paced, and growing team. The EHS Specialist is responsible for oversight of safety within a maritime/shipyard environment, supporting 1st shift operations with occasional 2nd shift coverage based on business needs. This position is accountable for supporting all safety activities across waterfront, vessel, and shipyard operations, including monitoring EHS objectives and targets, internal reporting of Safety department performance, and ensuring EHS programs, policies, and procedures are implemented and sustained. The EHS Specialist will ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements specific to maritime and shipyard operations, while supporting a strong safety culture that engages all employees, subcontractors, and marine trade personnel. The EHS Specialist role requires flexibility in working hours including nights, weekends, and overtime as business needs dictate. What You Will Be Doing * Interact with shipyard and waterfront team members to identify maritime-specific hazards including vessel work, hot work, confined spaces, working at heights, heavy rigging, crane operations, and over-water activities. * Support and conduct safety & health inspections across vessels, dry docks, piers, fabrication shops, and project sites; initiate corrective actions and verify closure of findings. * Apply the Company's incident/accident prevention program within an industrial and shipbuilding environment; investigate incidents involving vessel work, material handling, and operations, identify root causes, and ensure corrective actions are implemented. * Support injury and illness prevention initiatives using leading and lagging indicators. * Conduct safety training for shipyard personnel and subcontractors, including maritime-specific topics such as OSHA 1915 compliance, confined space entry, hot work, fall protection, lockout/tagout, and over-water safety. * Review new vessel work scopes, dry dock activities, customer facilities, and marine projects to ensure proper safety and health controls are incorporated. * Verify and maintain OSHA and maritime regulatory documentation including vessel inspection records, confined space logs, hot work permits, and training documentation. * Interpret and apply OSHA 1910, 1915, and 1926 standards, as well as US Army Corps of Engineers EM385, with emphasis on shipyard employment and marine construction requirements. * Serve as a member of the Safety Committee and contribute maritime operational expertise. * Maintain confidentiality with all investigations and medical records. * Liaise with contracted Occupational Medicine provider on exposure tracking, physical requirements, and return-to-work coordination. * Provide recommendations to project supervisors to enhance safety within ship repair, vessel fabrication, and waterfront operations. * Plan and oversee industrial hygiene and exposure monitoring activities including welding fumes, coatings, blasting operations, and confined space atmospheres. * Champion initiatives to improve EHS performance and reduce risk across marine, construction and shipyard operations. * Administrative responsibilities including managing spreadsheets, drafting documents, preparing reports, and developing training materials. * Additional duties as assigned. Your Background * Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Maritime Safety, or related field preferred * 5+ years of EHS experience in maritime, shipyard, marine construction, or heavy industrial environments strongly preferred * Demonstrated knowledge of shipyard operations, vessel repair, fabrication, and waterfront construction activities * Due to the sensitivity of this role and associated federal requirements, candidates must be U.S. Citizens (non-dual citizenship) and able to obtain and maintain U.S. Navy badging credentials as a condition of employment * Valid driver's license meeting insurance eligibility standards * OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety and Health Certification required; OSHA 30 Maritime or Shipyard experience preferred * Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification; EMT certification preferred * Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite * Experience with OSHA 1915 Shipyard Employment standards strongly preferred * Ability to influence craft personnel including welders, shipfitters, riggers, painters, and subcontractors * Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills * Experience with safety auditing, risk management, and maritime compliance programs * Ability to evaluate and communicate safety issues across vessel and shipyard operations * Experience developing and reviewing Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for marine construction activities * Experience developing Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs) for shipyard and waterfront work * Ability to conduct site visits across vessels, dry docks, and waterfront job locations * Proven ability to support safety training programs within a shipyard environment * Collaborative team player focused on continuous improvement of maritime safety performance The Work Environment at Rhoads The performance of this position involves exposure to shipyard, waterfront, and marine construction environments where PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, flotation devices, and other task-specific PPE is required. Must be able to work in a variety of physical conditions including sitting, standing, walking, and driving. May require: * Walking and standing on irregular surfaces including vessels, piers, and dry docks * Climbing ladders, ship stairways, and scaffolding * Working at heights and over or near water * Entering confined and enclosed spaces aboard vessels and within shipyard structures * Exposure to noise, welding operations, coatings, and heavy industrial equipment What Rhoads Can Offer You At Rhoads Industries, our team is the foundation of our success.
