Salary: $86,700.30 - $106,000.00 AnnuallyLocation : 1235 Ramsey Street Fayetteville, NCJob Type: Full-TimeJob Number: 202602933Department: Public Health DepartmentDivision: Environmental HealthOpening Date: 04/14/2026Closing Date: 4/21/2026 11:59 PM EasternSalary Grade: 120 Position Overview **Hiring rate will be determined based on qualifications and internal equityThe primary purpose of this position is to manage all operations of the Environmental Health Division, to include a satellite Environmental Health office located at the Historic Courthouse. This employee must manage and is responsible for the following programs in Environmental Health: On-Site Waste Water Program, Public Swimming Pools Program, Private Water Supply Program, Tattoo Program, Solid Waste Program, Vector Control Program, Demolition Program, Rabies Program, Meth Lab decontamination, Public Health Nuisance Complaints, Migrant Camps, Food and Lodging establishments, Residential Care Institutions, Day Care Establishments, Seafood markets, and Childhood Lead investigations located in Cumberland County. Examples of DutiesDuties for this position include, but are not limited to: Provide guidance, direction and consultation to supervisory staff in establishing priorities, meeting objectives, and managing work with within the departmentPerform field work with Program Specialists and review all work completed by Environmental Health Specialists to ensure consistency of work throughout the sectionPrepare budget for section for use in Environmental Health Division general budget processReview work done on a daily basis to include all reports, inspections, and pertinent documentation. Conduct program audits as appropriate.Work with Environmental Health Specialists and Legal Department in all legal matters in Environmental Court.Evaluate the needs to expand existing programs, inform and educate citizens when problems arise regarding enforcement of regulation and health standardsEmployee is subject to be called upon anytime to help the agency respond to a public health emergency which may include, but is not limited to, outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents (man-made or natural and intentional or non-intentional) as they arise, or any public health response requested by the Health Director. Minimum QualificationsSix years of experience in professional environmental health work at the environmental health specialist level or above in a health department, with three years of administrative management or supervisory experience.Management Preference: A minimum of two years' experience as a sanitarian in the programs, preferably five years in the programs described above.Necessary Special Qualification: Registered as a Sanitarian by the North Carolina State Board of Sanitarian Examiners.Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited universities.Applicants who have obtained their education outside of the U.S. and its territories must have their academic degrees validated as equivalent to the degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is a referral resource for applicants who need to have their credentials certified as equivalent. Thorough knowledge of environmental health methods and technology in both existing and emerging professional fields of work. Considerable knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of environmental health specialists. Ability to plan, organize, direct, and administer a large, complex, and/or diverse environmental health program. Ability to deal with the more difficult administrative, managerial, and environmental decisions. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with a wide range of public, private, and community groups and individuals. Ability to assess current and anticipated community and program needs, and to develop and implement programs to meet these needs.Must have or obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
