Job Description

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. The Staff Psychiatrist has experience in clinical care, administration and academics (research and teaching). He/she also carries an individual caseload of psychiatric patients. The incumbent will be expected to maintain a faculty appointment at Brown University Department of Psychiatry, at minimally the instructor level. The Staff Psychiatrist will be directly involved with the academic affiliates in implementing the psychiatric education of all Psychiatry trainees through oversight of the residency program and clinical supervision of trainees. This position is located within the Mental Health & Behavioral Sciences Service and reports to the Assistant Chief of MHBSS, Medical Services. The psychiatrist practices independently and supervision and consultation is of an administrative and consultative nature. Major Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Clinical: * Provides direct patient care commensurate with the standards for clinical administrative positions. * When involved in direct patient care or when supervising same, demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities to conduct examinations, determines diagnoses, therapeutic ability, effectiveness in emergencies, patient management, consultation and special skills, and record keeping. Competence will be demonstrated for young adult through geriatric age groups. * Clinical practice is characterized by acceptable provider-specific data in re-privileging reviews. Research * Involved in research with significant potential for scientific contribution including cutting edge research with Research Scientists at the VA. The highest level of competence is demonstrated through obtaining internal and/or external funding for research. * Active involvement in dissemination of research and clinical activities with competence demonstrated by attainment of multiple publications in peer-reviewed professional literature, a consistent record of presentation of findings at national scientific meetings and attainment of an appointment at Brown University Medical School. Education * Provides clinical leadership to interdisciplinary personnel. * Supervises at least one resident annually with favorable written reviews, will coordinate outpatient component of Brown University Psychiatry Residency rotation. * Successfully maintains Brown University Clinical or Academic faculty appointment. Administrative * Provides administrative oversight of the VA Placement for Brown Psychiatry Residents * Provides clinical supervision and QI monitoring as appropriate. * Participates as needed in response to and resolution of patient complaints. * Serves on facility, VISN, and national committees as directed by the ACOS, MHBSS. Professionalism * Complies with requirements for Outside Professional Activities. * Complies with the Code of Ethics for Government Employees. * Exhibits a professional demeanor in the conduct of all duties and will be generally accepted by employees and management officials as cooperative and technically competent. * Represents MHBSS internally and externally, in such a manner as to reflect positively on MHBSS and VAPHS. * Participates in all training programs required for optimal function in professional role. EDRP Authorized: Contact VHA EDRP Program Support Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus up to $15,000 per year, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification) Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting Telework: Authorized as determined by the agency policy Travel Required: Not required Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (standard tour but is negotiable).
