K-12 with Gifted Endorsement; Math and ELA Focused FTE: 1 Reports to: Building Principal, Director of Student Services FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Employment Status: Regular/Full-time Description: Assists school personnel in the identification, evaluation, and placement of gifted and talented children; provides daily instruction to assigned gifted students; prepares daily instructional lessons; provides an environment that encourages creativity; consults with regular classroom teachers on an informal basis.NOTE: The lists below are not ranked in order of importanceQualifications:Bachelor's degree (B.A.) or equivalent from a four-year college or universityAppropriate State of Ohio licensure with Gifted EndorsementSuch alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriateRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to work effectively with othersAbility to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writingEffective, active listening skillsOrganizational and problem-solving skillsBasic computer skillsAbility to operate school equipmentAbility to work in a team environmentKnowledge of academic area and teaching methodologySkills that foster and facilitate learning and classroom managementTraining in varied instructional designBackground/knowledge base in methodology and supervised practiceKnowledge of laws governing gifted educationAbility to assess needs and write WEPs that provide for those needsKnowledge of special education state and federal guidelinesEssential Functions:Ensure the safety of studentsTeach and evaluate the students using sound instructional practicesMaintain accurate and complete records as requiredAssists school personnel in the identification, evaluation, and placement of gifted and talented childrenMake provisions for being available to students and parents for educationally related purposes before and after the instructional dayCreate a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of studentsInstruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designatedDevelop a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of gifted and talented studentsElicits input from parents, teacher, school administration, and others involved in student program developmentParticipate in collaborative team teaching with cooperating teachersProvide classroom teachers with resource informationProvide achievement and specialized testing when determined by the IATAttend meetings and in-services as requiredProvide individualized tutoring sessions for students within the school day or after the school day, as mutually agreed upon by staff and studentCoordinates activities for gifted and talented children, which may include mentorships, advanced placement, the formation of special seminars, independent research, and other integrated curricular experiencesPlan collaboration schedules with regular classroom teachersMake contacts with the public with tact and diplomacyInteract in a positive manner with staff, students, and parentsRefer attendance, health, and psychological and emotional problems to the Principal and/or Guidance CounselorDesigns appropriate goals and objectives for students based on evaluations and staff and parent input; develops and implements individual Written Education PlansEnsure that the WEP goals/objectives for students are metProvide direct instruction in a resource/inclusion or tutorial settingProvides consultation on appropriate materials and teaching strategies for use by classroom teachers in assisting gifted and talented students in the regular classroomDevelops schedules and lesson plans for the classroom day, allowing for a variety of activities and special events appropriate for the studentsPromotes special programs and competitions that develop problem-solving skills, thinking skills, and those talents that have been identifiedProvides in-service to parents, mentors, aides, teachers, administrators, and general education personnel regarding the education of gifted childrenAssists in the development of educational evaluation and accountability procedures, curriculum, and staff development, and instructional or classroom management strategiesConducts preliminary and ongoing evaluations of student levels and needs through formal and informal meansSupervises and disciplines students following the student discipline codeEstablish and maintain cooperative relationships with parents through effective use of interim reports, report cards, and conferencesObserve the ethics of the teaching professionMaintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., case historyTake all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilitiesDemonstrate knowledge of subject matter and present clear, complete, and accurate explanations utilizing a variety of instructional techniques and media suitable to the level of learnersProvide career information and job training information to studentsUtilize a wide variety of instructional aids, including technology, to teach objectivesAdapt curriculum and provide alternative teaching techniques and assessments to best enhance student learningAdminister and score various tests for evaluation and diagnostic purposesAssist the administration in implementing all procedures and rules governing student life and conduct.Other Duties and Responsibilities:Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate mannerServe on committees and co-curricular activities as agreed uponDiscipline students when necessaryPerform home visits when possible or as neededConduct yearly surveys and evaluations if required and/or necessaryServe as a role model for studentsAssist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other instructional materialsWrite grants for equipment and money to fund activitiesInteract with other departments and school personnel when necessaryCounsel, advise, encourage, and motivate studentsServe as liaison with school personnel, parents, community members, universities and colleges, industry, business, and cultural institutions, and other interested publicsArranges field trips that are needed for gifted programsContinues to extend personal knowledge and to upgrade professional credentials in the area of gifted and talented educationPerform other duties as assigned Equipment Operated:ComputerCopy machinePrinterTelephoneTV/DVD playerCalculatorOther equipment as neededAdditional Working Conditions:Occasional interaction among unruly childrenOccasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissueOccasionally lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 25 pounds, e.g., paper boxes, deliveries of supplies and equipmentFrequently move and position oneself as necessary to access and operate equipmentFrequently move around the workspace and travel throughout the school building and/or the school districtEmployee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance use in the workplace throughout his/her employment with the District.
