Departmental Overview UC"¯Berkeley's School of Law is a nation"‘wide center for legal education, known for its vibrant community of students and scholars committed to leadership and service. It has ambitious development goals and is ranked among the top law schools in the country. The Career Development Office (CDO) provides legal career advice to law students and alumni. The office is staffed by eight attorney"‘counselors, each with legal practice experience and specializations across the four major employer categories: judicial clerkships, public interest, government, and the private sector. The Associate Director for Public Interest Programs ("AD") provides expert career counseling to Berkeley Law's 900 J.D. students and its 10,000+ alumni community, focusing on those interested in public interest legal careers. Responsibilities Research and analyze the current state of public"‘interest legal services and the job market, forecast emerging trends, and assess short"‘ and long"‘term feasibility of career options for students. Identify new and existing career opportunities, and evaluate evolving career"‘development needs of alumni attorneys. Design, develop, and implement workshops, programs, services, and resources"”including online guides and webcasts"”to address the needs of students interested in public"‘interest careers. Recommend and manage improvements to existing services, and devise new programs and resources as needed. Provide one"‘on"‘one, client"‘driven career consulting to students pursuing public"‘interest careers or internships. Assist students in conducting self"‘assessments of skills and interests. Offer general and specific career advice, job leads, and networking contacts cultivated through an expanding professional network. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) principles in all interactions and program design. Maintain and grow the School's network of potential employers, career professionals, and other legal"‘field contacts. Establish new relationships with public"‘interest organizations and fund"‘raising partners. Develop and oversee presentation and delivery of career"‘focused programs and events. Manage career"‘services staff on administrative tasks related to public"‘interest programming. Determine innovative media for content delivery"”including online, print, blogs, social"‘media posts, live webcasts, and more. Collaborate with Law School departments, research centers, faculty, student organizations, and administrative units to create mutually beneficial programs. Participate in panel discussions, research, and write articles on public"‘interest careers through local and national organizations. Required Qualifications Advanced knowledge of career decision"‘making and job"‘search techniques. Understanding of career"‘services functions, employer expectations, recruitment methods, and employment trends. Detailed knowledge of the public"‘interest legal job market and general knowledge of the private"‘sector legal market. Extensive professional network of practicing attorneys and potential employers. Highly effective problem identification and solving skills, presentation, verbal, written, and organizational communication abilities. Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and experience levels. Creative, entrepreneurial, forward"‘looking, and energetic approach to identifying and pursuing new programs. Excellent understanding of client"‘needs assessment, service quality standards, and client"‘satisfaction evaluation. Strong knowledge of human behavior, performance, learning, and motivation. Education / Training Advanced degree in a related area (e.g., J.D., LL.M.) or equivalent experience and training. Significant (minimum 5 years) public"‘interest legal practice experience. Preferred Qualifications Advanced knowledge of career"‘development theories. Knowledge of needs"‘assessment theory, workshop design, and implementation practices. Knowledge of or ability to learn UC programs. Salary & Benefits Salary range: $90,000.00"¯-"¯$104,640.00. This is a 100"¯% full"‘time (40 hours per week) career position, eligible for full UC benefits, paid monthly, and exempt. It is a hybrid role with up to 20"¯% remote capability.
