Head of Engineering - Envision

Lead the Platform Shaping the Next Generation of Therapies TLR Ventures builds software at the intersection of biotechnology, machine vision, and large-scale distributed systems. Our flagship platform, Envision, connects IoT-enabled laboratory devices with cloud-scale analytics, real-time computer vision, and AI-driven insights. These insights directly inform which new therapies advance to human trials "”and ultimately, which reach patients. With devices already deployed globally and expected 10x growth in the next 12 months, we are hiring a Head of Engineering to guide Envision through its next stage of scale, maturity, and technical ambition. The Role You will lead all aspects of engineering for Envision "” backend, frontend, infrastructure, DevOps/SRE, and security. This is a high-influence role that sits at the center of the company's strategy. You will own: Reliability, scalability, and AWS cost efficiency (six-figure monthly spend, growing) Enterprise-grade security and compliance posture Architectural standards across cloud, data, video, and ML systems Production ML and computer vision infrastructure (in partnership with ML leadership) The long-term architectural "north star" for a distributed, multitenant, AI-enabled SaaS platform integrating hardware, video, and cloud analytics This role reports directly to the CEO and plays a defining role in the evolution of our platform, team, and technical culture. What Success Looks Like (12 Months) Clear SLOs and materially improved production stability Lower per-device cloud cost alongside higher device throughput A simplified, aligned systems architecture that accelerates engineering velocity Strong SRE discipline deeply embedded across teams An engineering organization operating with clarity, autonomy, and excellence at 10x scale The Profile You have led complex, distributed systems in production and strengthened them under scale pressure. You likely bring: Deep expertise in AWS and modern cloud-native architecture Experience scaling multi-tenant SaaS platforms Background in high-throughput data, video processing, computer vision, or ML-enabled systems A track record of meaningfully improving reliability and cost efficiency Comfort engaging at architecture and code-review depth when needed A leadership style that aligns strong senior engineers around shared direction You are technically credible, operationally rigorous, and collaborative across disciplines. You excel at orchestrating complex cross-functional workstreams "” aligning Engineering, Hardware, ML, and Product around shared outcomes "” and you thrive in environments where success depends on influencing and driving clarity across diverse expert groups. Our core hours follow U.S. Pacific time, with a Redwood Shores office for optional in-person collaboration. The role may be fully remote, offering senior leaders the autonomy and flexibility to operate from where they're most effective. Our compensation package reflects the seniority and impact of this role: a total salary of $300,000-$400,000, along with medical, dental, and vision coverage.
