Job Details Third-party management group - affordable/lowcomp housing Salary: $75,000 - $95,000 per year Location: Montgomery, AL (Hybrid Remote) Position Type: Full-Time Department: Accounting / Finance Reports To: Controller Supervisory Responsibility: 1-3 accounting staff About the Opportunity We are a highly established, privately held real estate firm with a deep footprint across the region. We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to oversee a highly specialized and regulated affordable housing portfolio. Position Summary This role is responsible for financial reporting accuracy, strict regulatory compliance, audit readiness, and the supervision, training, and development of a small team of accounting staff. You will act as the right hand to the Controller for all things related to affordable housing financials. Key Responsibilities Oversee and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for a portfolio subject to specialized regulatory frameworks. Ensure strict compliance with program requirements, federal regulations, and GAAP. Oversee journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and chart of accounts maintenance. Direct audit support, including the preparation of schedules and responses to external auditors and regulatory agencies. Monitor reserve accounts, surplus cash calculations, and restricted funds. Assist with the annual budgeting process and in-depth variance analysis. Directly supervise, review, and approve work performed by 1-3 Property Accountants. Train staff on specific technical compliance requirements and internal accounting procedures. Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to established internal policies and strict reporting deadlines. Provide ongoing coaching, technical guidance, and active performance feedback. Serve as a technical accounting resource for property management and internal operations teams. Coordinate cross-departmentally on compliance matters and complex reporting deadlines. Identify opportunities to streamline accounting workflows and enhance internal controls. Demonstrated experience supervising, leading, or mentoring accounting staff. Strong understanding of affordable housing regulations and specialized compliance requirements. Solid experience in financial statement review and external audit support. High proficiency in Excel and real estate accounting software (such as Yardi, MRI, or RealPage). Preferred Qualifications CPA designation or active CPA candidate. Foundational experience in Public Accounting. Familiarity with programs such as Section 8 or HOME.
