LUYF: Community Outreach and Food Access Coordinator VISTALatinos Unidos Y Floreciendo is a community-rooted nonprofit that engages and empowers people by reconnecting them to land, food, and culture. LUYF currently serves approximately 1,300-1,600 individuals annually through its community-basedfarm program, bi-weekly Mercados Frescos, seasonal food distributions, and partnerships with local organizations. However, limited data systems, inconsistent coordination between production and distribution, and staffing constraints reduce efficiency and result in preventable produce loss during peak harvest periods. An estimated 6,000-9,000 pounds of food each year could be recovered and redirected to food-insecure families with stronger systems in place. In this position, LUYFs partners with Harvest Against Hunger through the Harvest VISTA program, a program incubator and catalyst that utilizes a team of AmeriCorps members to build sustainable, community food security programs. For this multi-year capacity-building initiative designed to strengthen food system coordination, reduce food insecurity, and minimize food waste for low-income and underserved households in rural Clark and Cowlitz Counties, Washington. Over time, the project will institutionalize durable systems, strengthen partnerships with growers and community organizations, and support data-driven decision-making. LUYF expects to increase fresh food distribution by at least 30 percent, recover an additional 8,000 pounds of produce annually, and improve consistent access to nutritious, food for a minimum of 1,400 low-income individuals each year. The member will focus exclusively on indirect service and organizational capacity-building. By strengthening infrastructure, the project will leave LUYF with sustainable systems that continue to reduce hunger, decrease food waste, and improve food security long after the VISTA resource ends. They will create coordination systems such as harvest calendars, distribution schedules, and communication workflows that align farm production with community demand.
