*Deputy Sheriff - Smyth County, VA Minimum Qualifications: 1. High School Graduate/GED 2. Minimum Age 21 3. Be in excellent physical condition 4. U.S. citizen 5. Valid Virginia Drivers License 6. Position requires working days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts 7. Must successfully complete and pass all phases of the academic requirements of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services for a law enforcement officer and maintain that certification during tenure. 8. Must pass a written, psychological, and medical examination. 9. Must pass a background investigation to include a criminal history inquiry. Note: Candidates who have engaged in any activity that would support a felony conviction are unlikely to receive favorable consideration. Misdemeanor convictions for crimes relating to theft, domestic violence, or assault are likely to disqualify (incomplete and/or inaccurate information on personal history may be cause for rejection). Deputy's position duties and responsibilities are as follows: 1) Reports to a Sergeant and notifies supervisor of all major crimes/incidents reported to him/her. 2) Patrols an assigned area, respond to citizen complaints to provide services to persons in need, investigate crimes and traffic accidents, arrest or summons violators, serve criminal warrants, serve civil processes and summons, and testify in court as necessary. 3) Complete and file accurate reports in a timely manner. 4) Maintain department equipment in operational readiness. 5) Performs other tasks assigned by a supervisor.
