Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.As a Manufacturing Engineer on the airframe assembly team, you will play a key role in the scale up of Joby's high volume aircraft production line. You will help the Joby team develop and implement the processes, tools, and ideas required to scale up from several aircraft per year to hundreds of aircraft per year. This role will require you to not only develop tools and processes but also contribute to the overall vision of a flying rideshare service by thinking beyond the confines of the traditional aerospace industry and re-imagining the possibilities of aviation.Make key contributions to the development of Joby's high-output production system that will produce aircraft at rates that have not yet been achieved in the aerospace industrySeek out and implement new manufacturing technologies and methods capable of dramatically accelerating assembly production ratesCollaborate with the tooling team to develop efficient and effective assembly tools oriented toward high volume productionCollaborate with Joby's partners at Toyota to develop highly effective production tools and systemsWork closely with the design and stress teams to ensure that manufacturability is guiding all facets of the airframe designAuthor clear, explicit, and easy-to-follow manufacturing work instructionsWork closely with the production team on the shop floor to quickly address issues and resolve technical challengesDevelop and implement factory layout for future airframe production facilityWork with quality engineering team to conduct first article inspections, assembly fixture qualifications, and PFMEAsLead development projects with multidisciplinary teams including design, stress, M&P, quality, tooling, production, purchasing, etc.Define assembly sequence and workflow for large and small airframe assembliesOwn implementation of assembly tools and equipment from concept development to final acceptance testingLead first time builds and provides ongoing support during factory bring upManage schedules for initial builds, identify schedule risks, and relentlessly seek opportunities to reduce timelinesIdentify improvement opportunities company wide, specifically those related to composite manufacturing and assembly operationsS. in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or similar field0-2+ years of relevant work experienceExperience with mechanical design, fixture and assembly tooling designExcellent verbal and written communication skillsStrong project management experienceExperience conducting PFMEAs and writing manufacturing work instructionsAbility to interpret mechanical drawings of piece-parts and assemblies, including GD&TProven ability to provide impactful technical feedback on new designs to improve manufacturability (DFM)Experience in prototype and production manufacturingProficiency in Catia, SolidWorks or similar CAD softwareExcellent problem solving and teamwork skillsAble to work in a fast paced engineering environment and quickly adapt to changing inputs, requirements, and directionStrong experience with composites manufacturing (lamination, bonding, drilling and fastening)Experience with automated/robotic manufacturing systemsFamiliarity with aerospace manufacturing, processing, and materialsExperience developing factory layouts and workstationsExperience with lean manufacturing methods and time study analysisCompensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $69,100-$109,300 per year.
