Motor Vehicle License Examiner

Motor Vehicle License Examiners conduct road tests to ensure that only qualified persons are licensed to operate motor vehicles. They examine applicants for all categories of motor vehicle driver licenses including passenger vehicles, motorcycles, commercial driver licenses (tractor trailers and buses), certified examiners, and commercial driving school instructors at various locations to determine fitness based upon standard rating guidelinesMinimum Qualifications: Graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma AND you must have:Either1: One year of experience that involved extensive face-to-face interaction with the general public while providing customer service.OR2: 30 semester credit hours of college-level study AND six months of extensive face-to-face interaction with the general public while providing customer serviceCivil Service defines the general public as a broad range of people NOT limited to a specific group of the public.Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $3,400 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam Counties will receive an additional $1,650 annual mid-Hudson adjustment. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means NO EXAMINATION IS REQUIRED, but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE A CIVIL SERVICE TEST. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.
